If it runs on battery ok then it will be the switch mode power supply, we expect them to last forever but they don't (having replaced two this year which were on laptops more than 5 years old tho)

You're better of replacing it.

It is fixable. Unfortuantely with the information we have it is impossible to know how much. With it is plugged in do any lights come on (or make a noise) when you press the start button? If it does then that is usually a good sign. If it does not then it is either the power supply, start button, or motherboard. In my experience it is usually the motherboard which is usually to expensive to replace. Some people can find the fault and fix them but good luck finding one of these people

You may have missed the warnings that the battery was low and it has simply shut down due to a flat battery. First thing to check is the output voltage of the charger. If it is dead you've found your problem, you need a new charger. If the charger is outputting the correct voltage then the next thing to try is removing the battery, if possible, and trying it with only the charger connected. Still no go? Try wiggling the power connector to check the connection paying attention to the lights on laptop.

Im scrapping down hundreds of laptops at the moment.
Mostly for the mother boards, I chuck the power plugs, CPU, & screens seperate into shopping bags.
Only find a few 2gig memory's & the heatsinks go into the Copper bin.
No hard drives but over 100 DVD drives.
Shopping bag of power supplys. & 2 of battery's.
Those apples look nice untill you try & scrap them, lots of screens for them though.

Are you able to turn it on at all if you plug it into the charger, or is it completly dead?

Is it actually OFF. Perhaps just the screen, (0r the connections to it), have failed. Can you try plugging it into an external screen ?

It is plugged in (battery is dead been for some time ) The lights come on so power is getting through. Yes could be one of several things stated above and might cost bit to repair if possible. But I have purchased a new one as can't be without. Got an HP, its bit smaller but does job once I get used to it. Would have loved an Asus like mine but to expensive. It gave me a good innings I suppose nearly 6 years.

Laptops have a black screen when off normally. Put your ear on it you'll hear it running if it's not off.

Does anything happen if you plug an external monitor into it?

Can you plug it into a tv even? HDMI maybe,,?

Good TVs often have a VGA port which you might be able to use if you don't have HDMI on your laptop.

Thats because the led array or cfl tubes that provide backlight through the screen are still running, but the lcd is off/black, no signal. So you get filtered dim light..grey screen.

Could be the vid connector to the motherboard off if you are lucky, more likely cracked solder balls on a BGA chip, a common failing especially if you haven't been fastidious about keeping its air vents free of obstruction, eg using on a bed or pillow. Plugging it into an external monitor will tell you more

Also make sure you haven't accidentally switched monitor modes with a function key, eg switched to external monitor only. That's a classic trap. Ignore fools who tell you to biff it based on pratically no information, they are witless and ignorant and think others should be as well.
