His cylinder was more than 50 years old it's amazing how these 2 came to this conclusion. His plumber said the failure of his hot water cylinder was caused by corrosion from chlorine in the city's water. His insurer said it was clear the damage was the direct result of council “negligence”. Neilson said he was shocked the tribunal sided with the council. He did not know what his options were now. Well I'm shocked that he's shocked that his 50 year hot water cylinder crapped out.

His options are to buy a new cylinder and have on tap hot water or not buy a new cylinder and have cold running water only. Thank goodness the poor ratepayers in Chch aren't expected to carry this sorry sod.

Our local plumber was saying that in Martinborough, hot water cylinders don't last as long as they should due to all the stuff in our water. But yeah fifty years is a really good innings for a hwc.

Acidic water eats at the copper.
Alkaline water, well you can get a leak, the crud covers it and chlorine loosens it, thus starting the leak dribbling out....

But chlorine itself? Nope.
