Graphics card for PC - Help!

#Post
1

My16 year old son would like a graphics card for Christmas.
He uses a lot of CAD software (Eg Fusion 360) and Photogrammetry (Meshroom)
The cheaper the better, preferably Nvidia.
Can anyone help me with a link or two?

Cheaper is not necessarily better and the pc may indeed benefit from a discrete graphics card but it needs a good CPU as well possibly. Perhaps if you posted the specs of the machine someone might be able to offer some targeted advice?

They may need the size of the computer case that you have as well. Some graphics cards are very big.

Cards for CAd are very different to gaming cards, here';s a list, various budgets in mind. They are more expensive than gaming cards.
Gaming and cad cards are not suitable for both, it's either or....

gaming cards are fine for CAD, and much cheaper bang for buck. Especially for someone who isn't earning their crust from it.

Except for the GTX1080 you linked in your list there, which was unquestionably a gaming card.

Have you asked him what GPU he wants?

If you're looking at a 7th gen intel they're 4-5 years old, so you're not looking at something particularly modern, might be a waste going with the latest 3000 series GPU.

The lowest of the previous generation GPUs would be the 2060:

You can get something like a GTX 1060 which is slower but cheaper.

Thanks ira78. Really appreciated!
The one in the link above is slightly out of budget, which of these ones do you think would be the best bet? Or is there something else better...but not as expensive as $500?

Thanks a million!

The 1660 is a fairly decent low end GPU, if that's your price range, and about 50% faster than the 1650.

Last question, is the $500 one in your link, worth that bit extra - eg significantly better/faster for just $100 more?
Thank you!

The 2060 is significantly faster than a 1660 but for those applications it is unlikely to make a lot of difference especially with an older CPU that is now fairly weak (especially if it's an i5)

If games are also in the mix then the 2060 makes more sense even with an i5

Also depends if you want to buy a new card as well, or are happy to buy second hand (just to throw a spanner in the works). A used GTX1080 will do the cad work just fine, would be cheaper and would be a better GPU if he wanted to game sometimes as well.

Nothing like a spanner lol..
Where would I buy a 2nd hand one so I can have a nosy and compare costs?
Thanks.

Search for GTX1080 here on Trademe, that would be your best bet.
