Seems its impossible to buy a house in Auckland as a single person with no dependents . Income is too low to be able to afford anything here.

The most simple solution would be to increase the income.

Agree, though as very little info is provided hard to give advice. A house is mentioned, but there are other options to get started with a plan to upgrade later.

Consider leaving Auckland. This, of course, depends on work/career choices. Auckland, when it comes to property, is almost a different country. Investigate work opportunities in other parts of NZ. I feel for people wanting to buy their first home, especially in Aucks. Most won't be able to unless their parents assist in financing and that's not how it should be.

Well yes as above, you have to get some boarders in, your situation is nothing new, 30 years ago you would be in the same situation, sure the house would be cheaper but also the interest rates would be very high like 18% so still you would be in the same boat. trouble is New Zealand is a low wage economy, no unions with power to advance wages, and compete with China, these are the main problems. Good luck.

Look outside of Ak central and surrounds. There are PLENTY of homes on the fringes/outskirts of Ak that you could afford with that income & deposit that can still easily benefit the 'Ak lifestyle'. We live about 50+ mins north of Ak City, yet still have the benefit of At Hop buses/easy access to the Shore/Ak City on the M'way when needed, yet have the benefit of living in a semi rural area with no need to leave (except for concerts or when the teens want to go to the City etc). Live so close to Nth Ak beaches - it's an awesome lifestyle with the Ak benefits. My work is literally 5mins away from my house, my kids walk to school and work every day - something we never had on the Shore. Same can be said for far Wst/Sth places in Auckland. Neither myself or my kids would ever want to leave Auckland, we just moved slightly further away from the central part lol - much cheaper, with more benefits!

LOL, unions are the answer, NOT.

Even minimum wage going up has caused the Govt to look at supermarket pricing!
Where do they think most the minimum wage earners work?
Not just the check outs, but the fields, the canning factories, all the base jobs.

So you raise their wages and the businesses push up the cost by a power of 3.

Does the Govt think mechanics and builders get paid $90-105/hr?
No, they get about 1/3rd of that, the rest is business expenses.

Really? I thought it was caused by all those supermarket owners appearing on the rich list. But I should have known, it's the guy collecting the shopping trolleys who's to blame.

If the business owners could push the price up by a factor of 3, they would already do so and make more money.

Unions are the answer as unionised workplaces get much better pay and conditions than non-unionised.

90k deposit so you can buy up to 450k at 20% LVR, 360k mortgage equals $656 fortnightly at 2.5% over 30 years.

82k minus 3% kiwisaver gives you over $2300 fortnightly, so about $1650 left to cover bills etc after mortgage payment.

Trademe property search shows hundreds of property within the Auckland region at or below 450k.

I don't see the problem.

How unionised is the Warehouse?

Pak n Save stopping Sticky Fuel discounts end of month. The cynic in me says they are already pre pricing in the $20/h minimum wage in April.

Get a boarder...or 2, that income counts with banks.

Not push up the PRICE by the power of 3, but the costs of labour.
Cafes and restaurants are a classic. their costs x 3 = meal cost.
But they work on the ingredient cost.
Mechanics are costed out at 2.5-3 times their wage for working on your vehicle.
Each business has a ratio, either labour cost or stock cost.
So raise the minimum and watch the rises.
