Does two balls of 4 ply make 8 ply?

#Post

silly question i know. i have two balls of four ply. If I knit them at the same time (so two threads on the needle) could I use them for an 8 ply pattern. I also have some what looks like 6 ply could i use that on an 8 ply pattern maybe with bigger needles? Am a bit confused
thanks

I have used 2 4ply together alot, works well but is slightly thicker than 8 ply for some reason.Don't know about the 6 ply,you could do a tenson swatch.

In theory it would work. Give it a try.

Do a tension swatch.

you could also do the WPI test. Take the thread and wind it around something smooth, laying threads next to each other and count how many to the inch. Ravelry often has the WPI for the yarn information, as do some other websites, it can make it easier to match yarns by actual thickness, rather than what the label says. There can be a variation between makers, and types of yarn, given the way some are wound as they are made.

Thank you for all the replies. The hats I have knitted with the yarn have come up fine, so I have learned a valuable lesson here! It makes me wonder how it would look in a cardigan. Thanks kittycatkin for that ideal also

4 ply describes 4 strands twisted into a single strand. Similarly 8 ply uses 8 strands twisted into a single strand.

If you use 2 of the 4 ply yarns it will be bulkier than an 8 ply strand, because the twisting process results in a more compact result.

For the usage you're describing I wouldn't worry about the comparative strength of 2 x 4-ply versus 1 x 8-ply, but what will be important is trying to get the tension even - otherwise you might have 1 tight strand and 1 loose strand resulting in loops becoming apparent after use.

gyro, perhaps you are confused with the difference in 4ply reference in NZ and in US - it means different things. In US it is 4 strands, in NZ it is thickness of total strands when the WPI is done.
