basic phone

#Post

My husband (73) has never had any interest in having a phone and thats ok. But he is a very keen cyclist now as he has an ebike. I constantly worry when he is not home when he says he will be and is always ok but I feel he should have a phone in case he needs help.I want to buy him a phone for christmas. It needs to be easy to use and doesnt need any bells and whistles. Any suggestions please and what is the cheapest plan.

How much do you want to spend? Many of the new smart phones are quite big so they may not be suitable. You can buy a basic phone for under $20 https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/vodafone-smart-a9-locked-si

If he is hardly going to use it he doesn't need to be on a plan. The Warehouse Mobile is 6c per minute or $12 plan for 31 days. Vodafone Myflex starts at $13 for 28 days.

If he is only going to use it in emergency go Skinny prepay standard rates, $5 every 12 months unless he uses up his $5. Calls are 20c per minute.

I did some research on 'senior' phones for my 73 yr old mother and bit of a disappointing selection available in NZ.

Something like this for instance has a SOS button that sends GPS location:

(And off topic, but my mother is not being helpful.. she doesn't want to learn how to use a cellphone so we are having to try and arrange a landline and phone).

On cycling, I use a Nokia smartphone when cycling which works with my Garmin watch which also has GPS. Nice thing is sharing on Strava, you can see your rides and can even share in real time where you ride is taking you. Useful when I am doing long rides into the country

going to be difficult i guess. because cheap phones are usually absolut nightmare trash if they are a smartphone. My old frien he is in to tech but cheap. he finally got a new nokia smartphone and said it was the best phone. i told him for years the more expensive ones are better . i would hunt for one with the longest standby time . for example my father has the samsung cover X waterproof one . not that i like samsung , but that was the 2 criteria i had waterproof and long battery time. all smartphone . cheapest in nz is skinny mobile however its telecom network= a phone with more bands as most global phones are not telecoms i think american network.

I dont really understand the difference between a ' dumb' cellphone and Portable home phone.

Well of course I do but your mum's case what's the difference. Get a cellphone which had charging stand. She could keep the cellphone on its charging stand. The only real differences are that she would have to dial area codes for all calls, and it would be useable anywhere.

Nokia have some new models out. Proper phones with buttons. There is even one which is waterproof and shock proof.

IE i found $18 of my pre pay set up had gone before I even managed to text the one person I bought it to be connected to. No manual supplied and hard to operate even though I got the internet manual for it. Vodafone even charge to send to their balance number. I dont mind old fashioned way of letter input but even that not straight forward.

You obviously had it using cell data rather that free WiFi.
That could happen with ANY smartphone.
