What would be a fair hourly rate for IT person?

#Post

There is a $99 call out fee and an hourly rate.
I have been quoted a rate but wonder what the average would be.
If you offer a professional IT service what are your hourly rates?

$160/hour.

What sort of IT person? A PC repair tech is generally paid less than say a programmer of Database Engineer of PLC tech or such.
It is like Medical , could be a GP nurse, could be a theatre nurse, could be a GP, could be a neurologist....likewise IT people....

Depends on what type of IT work is required. There are many many many different types of IT work and many many levels of skill and experience also.

Your IT man might charge $50-500 per hour.

why does he need to be called out? You could take the laptops to him and save on the 'call out' fee.

Ok. Transfer what - exactly?
And what are these double, triple, downloads?

Generally, just copy and paste user data between the two machines, preferably over ethernet cable. As for Downloads, if theres a lot and its a mess, just leave them behind you can always download what you need again from the internet, like you did the first time. Not sure what the call out fee is for, are you miles from their office? Can you avoid it by taking the laptops to them?

sorry I have brain fog, I was born before cars, phones, TV's calculators etc in our home. The technology has exploded in the last 30 yrs or so and my brain feels not able to take in new information. Someone can explain things to me to do with technology and my brain just freezes. Hard to explain.

I went through my documents last night, spent 2 hours + just deleting stuff I dont even know how it got there. Some things in triple or more downloads of the same thing. I wonder if stuff gets downloaded automatically like attachments etc. receipts, invoices, pictures etc

There may be a service you can go to to learn more about how to use your computer, more of a community based one.

Transferrring data, I'd charge $50.
Sorting out your downloads, I wouldn't do it at all.
You do.

That's fine if you're a social media "influencer" with10,000+ 'followers' - somehow I don't think the OP is one of those.

Lol LYL absolutely not, I doubt I have any followers and if I do I wouldnt know where to find them, im not the pied piper LOL

I would get a good laugh out of someone suggesting that too me, regardless of how many followers they have. Then charge them more

Finding duplicates is easy. CCleaner has a duplicate file finder tool. You leave the one you want to keep in the location you'd normally expect to find it, and delete the others. Often duplicate downloads can just result from clicking a link twice, either in error or impatience because you think it hasn't worked, but usually multiple downloads of the same file will have the same name but with (1) etc added. They can be easily found by sorting the items alphabetically by filename.

Why care about downloads. Just remove the ones you don't want from the download folder. Most duplicate downloads will have (1) or 'copy' in the file name - sort by name and delete everything with those in the file name. Or run a search thru the download folder and do that.

Get yourself a portable USB drive and copy everything you wish to keep safe (backup) onto it. Likely that will include documents and pictures only.

Then copy them back onto the new machine. Trying to copy already-installed programs between machines ain't an option - they need fresh installs that you can download from th www.
