For that price, I'd expect Szechuan.

Silly question. It all depends where.
West Coast, Southland yes. Main centres and most other cities in NZ, no.

but does that matter? you don't HAVE to own the house you live in. I know that's the NZ way but perhaps it's just too bad? I know that sounds callous but if people accept reality and stop chasing an unattainable dream and start focusing on other things, maybe they'd be better off. Life isn't fair, or equal.

There is nothing that can be done about it now, it's too late. Well, there is something that could be done - manufacture a substantial market crash.

Hopefully the end of the mortgage holiday will see some drop in prices. It may very well happen as the ASB has said in a media release the end of the holiday is a concern or words to that effect.

I'd even say a very average 2 bedroom house. In 2016 in Chch, I was pre-approved for $310k (which was actually surprising as I'm 100% self employed) and I just wasn't prepared go above $270k for a 2 bedroom, but even the most average/run down ones in most suburbs were going for above $300k. I couldn't find a 3 bedroom house at all for $300k.

Before moving across the ditch in 2019, I rented a 2 bedroom, old mouldy crap hole in St Albans for $390pw. When I moved, I realised I can rent a lot more over here for that same amount of money (except I own now, so it doesn't matter).

I wish the Chch property market would humble itself a bit. It's just wrong, especially when compared to wages.

Depending on your circumstances, tiny houses are an option. I just wish all councils had the same rules regarding them and that the rules were sensible!
I'm seriously looking at buying one in the next few years.

You'll be devastated to know that the vast majority of those on payment deferral scheme have now returned to normal payments and won't be facing financial ruin.

Tiny houses are a great option in theory...Until you need to take a poo while you have visitors. They're a hipster solution, a bit like what people seem to call a "life hack", where it works great on TV and in theory, but not so well in real life. It's basically the groomed moustache and single origin cold brew coffee version of trailer park accomodation.

And yet, Puddleduck, if you watch several of the videos in the link I posted, you will find that many of the people are enjoying living in their tiny home so much that they don't want to go back to living in a "normal" sized house.
As for the toilet situation. it's no different to people who live in a granny flat/studio accomodation.

Its leasehold land, your not getting on the property ladder buying that.

Too big a lawn for me to mow these days and too small for my old horses and deer but some folks would love something that size.

You wouldn't need to bring your own deer, they turn up anyway.

Mine is a pet red deer, she's 28 so the young 'visitors' might be too rough on the old girl.

Puddleduck I'm genuinely interested to know why you say it is very different in reality.
I can understand why some people go back to a "normal" sized house however I can definitely understand why so many do not - less money needed for rent/mortgage, rates, power, etc.
For singles and couples who like to spend a lot of time outdoor and/or away from home, they make a lot of sense.

Even down here it's now becoming harder to buy at $300k. Was surprised to see the price of this one...it's actually been reduced this week.....think it was $310k in last weeks property press.

And I see the new rating values are out this week and some big increases coming our way... the council will love the extra rates income they are going to get in due course

The tidy 2-bdrm rental I co-own in Whanganui. We'd be happy with 300k - not quite ready to sell, though. Tidy inside, 800 sq/m flat section.

Reasonable for Invercargill.
I know somebody who's selling his for $70,000
I paid $9,500 ($7,500) for mine in 1998
House prices here were good untill 2003 when they rose, that $40k house then is now $250-300k

Early 80's I could have had a 3 bedroom house for $25k in the middle of Frankton Hamilton.
Should have but didn't, sometimes regret it, (now valued at over $550K)

Christchurch- "botched repair...insurance till date of sale.."
In South Island, listings in Grey, Buller, Invercargill
In North Island, listings in Kaitaia, Awanui, Kaikohe, Kaipara, Taumarunui, Murupara, Whanganui. An older house in Hawera, with a full section for $200,000 (weathertight issues or other?).
