Flightaware tracking

#Post

How come Flightaware sometimes shows that a helicopter is kilometres away when I can see the helicopter right over my house?

How live is FlightAware's tracking and status data?

"The data displayed on FlightAware.com is typically 30 seconds delayed from real-time. Maps animate the aircraft position toward the last known position. An aircraft's position on the map may lag real-time by 1-2 minutes."

How often does the data update or refresh?

"Depending on the data source, updates are usually one to four times a minute. For registered members that are logged in, pages will receive more frequent updates."

There is a very good reason why it's delayed by 30 seconds. There is also a very good reason why certain aircraft are exempt from running a beacon.

I have a FlightRadar24 receiver, I can see (visual) aircraft, see the data coming through my receiver and see the updated info on FlightRadar, normally within a second or so, no delay.

Difference between FlightAware and FlightRadar is that FlightAware estimates a few data inputs along with the flight plan and indicates the route. FlightRadar only uses real time tracking as it is available. This is why you usually see FlightRadar data on news and official reports.

I discovered that Flightaware shows the latitude and longitude as well as the time, so I will be able to check that next time they go overhead. I believe that the track plotted is sometimes quite incorrect. I am just curious.
Other sites such as FlightRadar don't show anything at all for the helicopters.
Ever since the helicopter base moved to Pikes Point, it is not so noisy at night around here!

The fact that Flighaware is able to track these helicopters (three of them) is proof that they ARE running beacons.

I don't see it.
But I am looking at where the police helicopters are, in case that is not obvious.

They are both. But to go back to my original point, certain people are upskilling their technical skills and receive a definite benefit from knowing exactly where the NZP choppers might be and so there is a valid reason to NOT have beacons/transponders turned on 24/7.
