Question re 1980s or 1990s Sony Walkman

#Post

Hi I have a tape playing Sony Walkman (high end model). It was expensive at the time and I have hardly used it. It is in near new cond. It wont play a tape but all other function seem OK. Someone said it is probably the belt perished. Is this an expensive or a DIY job. Dont want to spend too much on it. Does anybody even service them now?! cheers

I've used rubber bands lol, they only last so long. Might be able to cut a push bike inner tube into thin rings and use those.

Assortments of generic belts are available - viz:

ieces/p/HP0650

Much cheaper from Aliexpress if you want to wait for delivery - viz:

If you want it serviced/repaired try contacting someone like Axent Audio Products. (axent.co.nz)
Or there are a few independent old stagers who can service vintage equipment if you are prepared to courier your 'precious' items to them...

Interesting, as thought cassette playing classic Sony Walkman would be getting more valuable as a collectable. You see the iconic players in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Checked eBay and the 'right' models, they are asking thousands but then you see that they also selling newer models brand new in the box dirt cheap.

One of those things that must have been sold in such large numbers, that must models just aren't rare enough

I can do it for you. You need the proper belts otherwise the performance is really bad.

They are quite valuable now.

I've got a beat up 90s one which I probably got when I was about 13, but the belt is perished.

They are pretty easy to change, see youtube. I would change mine but I don't want to spend any money on it.
