Epoxy Resin question

#Post
1

I did a Resin Art class in Australia 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately some of my pieces are slightly tacky- probably my fault. I have to recoat them. My question - does anyone know of a supplier of art epoxy resin that is a reasonable price? What I have found so far is so expensive and the items are just not worth that cost. Or maybe someone has a simple fix it remedy. Thanks

Use the search term 'Norski' for casting resins here.
Or try leaving them in the sun, they may harden over time. Or dip them in varnish?

I use Total Body Shop Supplies in Petone. Local craft shops have it( very very expensive ) and Bunnings too ( less expensive ) but TBS is really quite reasonable. Gets better the larger quantity you get

There is no simple fix, unfortunately the only answer is to remove the uncured epoxy and start again, here is a video of the problem with the solution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dwZbltWIRo

Many thanks for your replies. I have 3 of 6 coasters that are slightly tacky. Varnish apparently is not the answer. We coloured the resin then poured it over timber coasters. They are only small areas so I think I will just leave them as is. The video is great but the scenario is a much greater problem than mine. Thanks

A good priced art resin can be bought from liquid polymer glass ltd. auckland. ph 09 8135600. ask for michael. prices are $20.00 per ltr plus gst and freight.if you can scrape some of the soft spots of , i rub with 91%alcohol. then recoat a second layer. most times the cause is not mixing enough.

I've had a good play with resin, making a sort of table art recently.
Like oversized coasters. Encased wood.
My first couple were complete failures.
I found all my problems were the mixing incorrectly.
Seemed to have it sorted now though and have moved onto high gloss resin.
All resins are different with slightly different instructions for the best results.
Really neat stuff when it all works well.

Most resin is not UV stable, i use a concrete sealer, but only comes in large quantities, so check out a spray on uv proof product.

I poured much epoxy resin for over six years in an electrical factory. It is essential to have the resin/hardener ratio exactly correct, or it won't set properly.
I had accurate scales to measure the amounts. I used large paper cups and wooden spatulas. You need to scrape the mixture out of the corners of the cups, and scrape the mixture off the spatula. The resin on the spatula will probably not set.
If you are mixing small amounts it is hard to get the measurements correct.
If you heat the work up beforehand it will set faster and better. But not too much heat as setting epoxy is exothermic and will get hotter and hotter until it catches fire!

had a friend that used to make paua stud earrings encased in resin - & he used to put them into an old frypan on a very low heat [just warm] & leave them over night & then polish them several days later..
