1 | My great x2 grandfather Archibald Thompson was a constable in the 3 or 8 Division - Armed Constabulary for fighting in Taranaki it seems mostly in the Pukearhue location. I have no idea how to research this. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. mnkool - 2020-01-20 14:10:00 |

7 | Oh wow h28skipper and stock thank you so much...... I am so excited - researching dad's paternal (biological) family is really interesting and difficult I know so little since Dad was adopted. Once I found Archibald was a solider, I thought there might be a chance that there would be a photo of him. I dont really want to go to bed now... I want to keep looking at the images. 10 | Oh my h28skipper - thank you much for the information you have found. Especially the last article, about how Thomas came to only have one arm. Funny thing is I cant find his death certificate - I would imagine he stayed close to the Taranaki area? mnkool - 2020-01-21 09:10:00 |
11 | Oh h28skipper - Mary Thompson committed suicide - there was a inquest. Considering the year was 1904, her family did not condemn her for it and a put a lovely memorial notice in the paper the following year. mnkool - 2020-01-21 09:26:00 |

This article says Mary had been suffering ill-health for about 5 years and became worse. When left alone for a few minutes she took the poison 'carbolic'. It seems she wanted to end her suffering which may explain the family's attitude. h28skipper - 2020-01-21 14:24:00 |

16 | Yes, there are many, many Thomas Thompson deaths so it is a bit of a minefield. However, I found this death and wondered if it is your Thomas. PATEA MAIL, VOLUME LIII, 7 SEPTEMBER 1932 I then looked for a death entry and found this one. The age at death indicates an 1866 birth year - your Thomas was born 1866. And the actual date of death (03/09/1932) matches the newspaper report. Further, he died in Eltham which is in Taranaki h28skipper - 2020-01-21 15:50:00 |
17 | That makes sense - a member of the family told me they thought he sold newspapers on the train, I guess with effort it is something you could do with only one arm. Interesting Thomas's wife was still alive at this time, but obviously they did not live together and his wife is buried with her first husband after she died a few years later. mnkool - 2020-01-21 18:13:00 |
