Giving unused DNA kit to someone else

| Could someone please help with my query re using a DNA kit sent for someone for someone else? I gave a DNA kit to my daughter for Christmas but she is keen to give it to her grandmother on her father's side who is very elderly. She would set up an account for her and manage it if it was possible to do that. There is a mystery surrounding her grandmother's paternity so she is keen to try to find the answer. TIA. meetee - 2020-01-13 18:44:00 |
| We have searched the Ancestry site for an answer but can't find a clear answer. I have just realised that we could probably send an email to Ancestry but I know how helpful people are on this message board. meetee - 2020-01-13 18:50:00 |
| I purchased a DNA kit for my mother who unfortunately passed before it could be used, so I gave it to her brother for his 80th birthday. There were no issues with managing it. firemansgirl - 2020-01-13 18:57:00 |
| If it’s an Ancestry kit, as long as she hasn’t activated the kit yet it should be fine. “An AncestryDNA kit is not connected to an individual until it is activated using the kit’s activation code.” https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Gifting-an-AncestryDN Not sure about any of the other companies, but would assume that they also can be passed on as long as they haven’t been used and/or activated yet. ogni1975 - 2020-01-13 18:57:00 |
| Thank you very much! I didn't see that in the answers to my question. meetee - 2020-01-13 21:33:00 |
| An ancestry kit unactivated can be passed on (but they do have use by dates, don't delay). They cannot be passed to someone in another country. jhan - 2020-01-14 12:33:00 |
| I'd contact the supplier of the dna kit and ask for the name to be changed. They'll soon tell you what, if anything, is required from you. Cheers. tessnjess - 2020-01-14 15:26:00 |
| I gave a requested kit to my cousin, who said he could not afford it, so I bought him one, 3years ago!!!!!! and he has never used it. I have talked to him about it, $200 at the time, (or there abouts) and he had no excuse for not using it. But has refused to send it back to me. I even suggested he get one of his sons to use it, same blood line to me!!! Moral is , be careful as he was the one who suggested we both do the DNA, and I was sucked in, No trouble with transferring to another person, I enquired at the time.
