Which Sarah Ann Green?

1 | My 2nd great grandmother is a mystery. She states on her census's while married to my 2nd great grandfather, James Gale, that she was from Wokingham or Binfield in the UK. I can find two Sarah Ann Green's - one born in Farringdon and one born in Abingdon at the same time. There is no record of her in the 1861 or 1871 census's. According to the 1871 census my 2nd great grandfather was unmarried and yet in the 1881 census he has a wife and 9 children - 4 of which were born in the 1860's! I can find no census information on any of the 4 children in 1871 either. There is another couple called James and Sarah Ann Gale who were married in Pangbourne and appear in the 1871 census much younger and with different children. Can anyone help? megamum2 - 2019-12-29 09:17:00 |

10 | Where did the Green come from? There is a Sarah Hale in Binfield who matches what you have for Sarah Gale in 1881. Sarah is baptised in Binfield on 22 Sep 1839 to James and Jane Hale. In the 1861 Census she appears with children Sarah, Elizabeth, John and Mary. It says she's unmarried. James Jnr is missing but there is a baptism for him in 1863 with mother Sarah Ann Hale and no father. The 1851 Census has Sarah at home with her parents and children Eliza and Sarah! They don't seem to appear after 1871 which is consistent with the 1881 Census. It's possible that the children were born out of wedlock and would be registered or baptised under their mother's name and then be listed under their father's in the Census - perhaps after James' mother died? Or they're her children from another relationship? Enumerators sometimes didn't pick up on the subtleties of family relationships! rednicnz - 2019-12-30 15:39:00 |
11 | Thank you! That makes a considerable amount of sense to me as there family rumors that have been floating around that could not be substantiated! My grandmother had the 'Green' name in a photo album. Sadly she nor my grandfather are not with us anymore to confirm. Happy New Year rednicnz! megamum2 - 2019-12-31 07:18:00 |
12 | I found James Jnr - he was at his grandparents house in 1861 Census. The daughter "Sarah" stayed a Hale as she would have been old enough to move on by the time her mother Sarah and James were together. The baptisms are making sense as well as they appear to happen much later in the Hale children's lives. Huge hole in family tree is coming together like a jigsaw puzzle. My father has just confirmed after hearing my findings that 'rumor' is starting to bring back memories for him of family tales. Thanks again for your help rednicnz! megamum2 - 2019-12-31 12:18:00 |
