NZ 19th and Early 20th Century Mugshots - Where?

| Hi, I may be 'misremembering' but I seem to recall there was some way to search NZ mugshots online, in addition to the small selection featured on NZ Police's website. I can access the NZ Police Gazettes easily enough but don't know where to look for mugshot photos of a relative (online only) which gazette entries indicate were taken in Lyttleton in 1891 and in Invercargill in 1907. Can anyone help please? Thanks :-) ed65 - 2019-12-22 12:31:00 |
| Ah - these are the instructions I remembered reading in 2017 https://www.facebook.com/notes/archives-new-zealand/police-g But it turns out these are the same Police Gazettes I was looking at on Ancestry.com. Can't see that they include any photos [for the years I'm interested in]. Edited by ed65 at 12:57 pm, Sun 22 Dec ed65 - 2019-12-22 12:45:00 |
| The NZ Police Gazettes are now also in Papers Past. The index at the front of the Gazette collection for each year should include a reference to a photo if there was one. The Papers Past collection uses optical character recognition so you might strike it lucky with a name search. I found references to complainants, who don't seem to have been indexed by Ancestry. The earlier Canterbury & Otago Police Gazettes are also there. You can also see the Police Gazettes at Edited by stock at 1:44 pm, Sun 22 Dec stock - 2019-12-22 13:42:00 |
| Many thanks for that info Stock. Had a search but apparently pages of mugshots only started being published in the Police Gazette from Oct 1908. I've already got the [many] PapersPast mentions of this particular relative but he seems to have 'retired' after 1907 so I doubt I'll find a mugshot of him in the gazettes. I wonder if those photos that were taken of him in 1891 and 1907 still exist. Maybe in NZ Police archives? ed65 - 2019-12-22 14:45:00 |
| you can look on Archway under New Zealand Police Gazettes, the digitised one's start on page 7 about half way down crab2 - 2019-12-24 17:03:00 |
