We used to be able to buy packages cheese straws in supermarkets, lovely cheesy and crispy snack. Haven't seen them for ages. Anyone seen them anywhere?

I don't think these were the very moreish cheese straw type nibbles that we tried a year or so ago but whatever brand they were, certainly didn't last long. :-))

PAm's Finest cheese straws are great. Not sure if those are what you mean - I only saw them at Pak'n'Save and hardly shop there. (I can walk to Countdown, so do most of my shopping there)

Just cheese grated onto pastry and baked aren’t they?

Cheese straws as I understand them are made from a dough which is like very short pastry, with strong cheddar or parmesan incorporated in the dough.

Remember twiglets - looked like wood, and tasteless

Make cheese twists, roll out flakey pastry sheets a bit thinner, sprinkle tasty or epicure cheese, roll again to push cheese into pastry. cut into strips, and twist, back 220 C for a few minutes - watch it, they burn quickly. For a change, spread pastry with mustard, marmite, chutney, etc.

That’s how we made them “properly” at school and twisted the strips but these days I’m too lazy for that so I just grate cheese over frozen puff pastry and sprinkle with cayenne pepper before cutting into strips and baking

I agree Sarah - Yummy marmitey taste, I buy them every month or so from the English shop. I always remember the Mr Bean Christmas episode where Mr Bean is entertaining and has no food to serve so he breaks off some twigs from the tree outside the window, dips them in a jar of Marmite and serves them as twiglets.
