Question about DNA testing

#Post
1

My mother recently got her DNA tested, so I have been going through all the matches over 400 of them to see how they link.
I’ve so far identified 160 of them that all link to her maternal side ( my grandmother’s) . How can this be the case that I haven’t been able to link any at all yet to her fathers side? Can DNA be stronger on one side?

There is always a chance that her "father" is not her father

How good is your tree on her father's side? The areas I don't have matches are where I don't have a good tree. Or the matches don't have a good tree for me to figure things out.

And do you have any cousins who have tested that you would expect to find on that side?

Could depend how many, if any, descendants of her paternal side have done tests so matches are possible. Not all testers make a tree available to check.

Maybe her Dads family haven’t bothered testing their DNA ?

Question. For those who have done it, is it really worthwhile?

I have tracked the paternal side back to the mid 1700's at which point, Parish records can be a bit of a gamble.

But as to the original post, I tend to agree with #5.

If you don't have a good tree of lateral relations, and those you are looking at don't have a good tree too, you won't have anything to create common matches with. Without a few common matches, and matches in common with them and other people, you'll have no idea who they are descended from as names change rapidly as the generations pass and a direct line common ancestor might be a few hundred years and 4 or 5 name changes back.

If you can find siblings and cousins and aunts/uncles to also test, a whole extra world of viable matches opens up simply be being able to identify matches in common to the family members in the different DNA segments they received from the same sources.

YOu your mothers father was an only child of only children then you won't get strong matches, be patient christmas is coming and people give kits as gifts, good luck.

We’ve done them...???? (It’s a family member who understands computers who is doing all the work and research). ????

So far we have had relatives from both sides of my family contacting her and we have filled in some of the jigsaw ???? puzzle that is our history.

I encourage people to spit in the jar, ????it’s turning out to be very interesting and a whole lot of fun.

Wish I had got my Mum ???? to do one, she would have enjoyed joining the dots with us and it would have added more information to our study.

I can’t believe how different yet the same we are! ???? ????

Thanks for all the posts.
To answer some of the questions. I have done the tree on both sides back to the 1500’s in some areas.
I understand that Thru lines can show where people sit. However I’ve been able to link 160 people through common matches etc.
Thru lines has the fathers side as names only, but when I click on each one of them that I have input into the tree, it shows she has no common matches with any of them.

Sorry to add I have around 1300 people listed on the family tree.
There are a couple of second cousins but again only from the maternal side

If you have no DNA matches on a paternal line, it could be a Non Paternal Event. Unfortunately a secret may only show thru DNA. Having said that it could be that very little testing done by that line. Put your tree up in pedigree mode and use hints and member connect suggestions to find trees for anyone who has the paternal ancestors you are seeking. Bring up their tree to see if they directly related, if yes bring up their profile to see if they say they have tested dna. Also Google dna leeds analysis to see if you have any surname clusters. My cousins dna matches has very few paternal matches, a 593cm, a 90, a couple at 70, some 30s then 13. Good luck. Ask again if you need more help.
