6 | When my father died, we decided to restore my great grandfather's grave at Waikumete. That allowed us to inter Dad's ashes, and those of his sister, and also put on an additional headstone that mentions my great grandparents five children. Their generation had all been cremated, wish ashes scattered, so we wanted somewhere where they would all be memorialised. pasadena1 - 2019-10-29 19:13:00 |
7 | pasadena - I think it is so good that old plots are being used - as genealogists we know that a couple of generations no one looks after the plots and with more generations going in them then the chances of them being looked after in the future are better - well done. kiwiwendy - 2019-10-30 21:22:00 |
8 | We use our old graves for more modern plaques because there are no more spaces left for us and ashes are all that can go there, so this is a nice idea for those not intending to be represented with their generations of forebears in the family plot . Unfortunately, whilst I would one day like to do the same, I am also aware that one of the aunts who would belong on a plaque such as this had a specific request for no memorial and no grave. I don't at this point feel it appropriate to ignore her wishes, nor feel it appropriate to leave her off a group memorial of all her siblings either, but maybe one day when the old generation have all gone it might be something to revisit with consultation in the wider family. morticia - 2019-10-31 00:35:00 |
