I have same problem. Mine is in a supposedly airtight container but like you, I don't use it much either. There is a 'soft' type but it still goes hard.

I have had the same problem. I put a layer of glad-wrap/plastic on top of it in the containter, then lay a piece of wet kitchen paper on top, to keep the atmosphere moist.

The sugar goes hard because it dries out.

Until we moved into our new house where it is obviously a drier atmosphere I had never had a problem with brown (or raw) sugar going hard but from doing a Google search I found a way round the problem and it's easy.......Add some marshmallows to the sugar container(s); however I'm not sure that they will sort already rock hard sugar - I used the hard dry sugar first, then added marshmallows to the container with a just-opened packet of sugar. Once each packet of sugar is used we use the marshmallows for our hot cocoa (or chocolate) and they give the drink the yummiest slightly caramel flavour, then with the new packet of sugar I add more marshmallows - currently there are 9 marshmallows in the brown sugar and a similar number in the raw sugar. The sugar still dries out a little little bit but doesn't form a rock hard lump as it did pre-marshmallows.

I'm not sure if the type of container makes any difference but in our previous houses I used Tupperware (for 30+ years) and with this new house/pantry I opted for new Sistema containers which is what our daughter also has and I'm not aware that she has any "rock hard" sugar issues but in any case, she lives in a different part of the country. :-))

Even more simple is just put some sliced bread on top of sugar, close container. Next morning take out bread and push spoon or knife down into sugar to start break up and shake container violently. Simply magic.

Just wish I'd known this over the previous fifty years of solid brown sugar.

I keep mine in a jar in the fridge, works well :-)

Microwave it for about 15-30 seconds and it softens.

put a slice of bread in your container on top of the hard sugar. next day it will be soft. the bread absorbs the moisture. I do it all the time when mine goes hard

I always leave the brown sugar in its plastic bag and put it in a Sistema air tight container and it is never hard. I just take whatever amount I need to use from the bag and fold the top over, pop it in the container and put the lid on. I have heard a lot of people say Sistema does not stay air tight, but I have not had any trouble with them but I never put them in the dishwasher. I have had my containers for years and they are still good.
