Awful agria potatoes.

#Post

Not having much luck with agria potatoes at the moment. Usually buy them from Countdown. Bought them loose and found so many with brown lines through them in places. Bought a 5kg bag which had the same thing. They also don't taste that great. What's the next best thing?

All potatoes that I've tried are a bit like that at the moment I find, although I don't eat them very often.
I buy a few & then when I go to use them, they are sprouting, so I guess that they are itching to get growing & reproduce?
We have to remember that they were dug many months ago & have been stored. (people all deteriorate with age, so why shouldn't spuds) ;o)
Bring on the next season's new potatoes, with mint & lashings of Lewis Road butter!
Sorry paora-tm, I'm not much help

It's long past the end of the season for potatoes and any on sale will have been in storage for months. We're mainly eating kumara and pumpkin instead, eagerly awaiting the new season potatoes in about six weeks' time.

Were still using big bag of Maris Anchor which seem to keep well, they cost more than usual though.

I have bought agria, no issues, perhaps the bag you are getting?

Basically NZ doesn't grow enough potatoes of good quality since the psyllid fly arrived. Its a struggle to find good ones at the best of times in the North Island now. I think south has been spared to a certain extent but those days will be over pretty soon if not already.

It's the wrong time of year for the floury potatoes like Agria.

Luckily Agria are not floury. They are the best potatoes for roasting, baking and salads.

And they are available as a loose potato - so I can pick and choose at my local Pak'n'Save - although they charge now 3 dollars a kilo.

So I mostly grow my own which are even better tasting and if harvested in autumn will last all winter in a brown bag. I am still eating them now - the next lot will come on in November/December.

So far no psyllid here in the bush :) - hi beaker59!

Were they a very firm med sized potato unwashed?
I bought a bag similar and I’ve got a feeling that’s what they might have been. Prior to that I’ve not been able to get decent potatoes for months.

They are floury; and how a potato can be best used as roasting baking and in salads is new to me.
Agria potatoes are medium to large in size and are oblong to oval, long, and somewhat uniform in shape. The semi-smooth skin is pale yellow to light gold with some brown specks and spots. ... Agria potatoes are mild and earthy with a floury, fluffy, and starchy texture.

Agree, Agria are most definitely classed as floury. The only way they would work for boiling/salads would be if you dug your own crop when they were still golf ball-sized "new" potatoes. (Have grown them myself.)

Try mashing up old lotto tickets with a little milk and butter.

Guess there has to be some compensation for the appalling climate.
