ANCESTRY OR FINDMYPAST?

#Post
1

Would appreciate advice as to which of the above is better for research, particularly in the UK and Ireland. I can't afford both so I need to pick one.
Cheers.

I suggest you do the 14 day free trial on both to see which one you find the best for you, just make sure you cancel before it is due to be charged to your credit card/debit card, if you do go with Ancestry, before paying come back here and get the discount link which will only work if you have no active sub and let the free trial expire completely.....

I have been a member of Find My Past but the sub is almost due again. I just wondered if Ancestry would be better, but don't have 14 days to find out before I have to renew. Ancestry certainly has a good discount offer!

they each have something to offer, I have both as Ancestry has some records Findmypast don't have and vice versa, only you can make that decision

Or you can access both for free from within the library. Just connect to their wifi or use their public PCs.

Buy a month at a time, go hard until sub runs out, repeat with the other one then take a break and take care of real world things before repeating. I usually put Ancestry first and rack up a list of search results for FMP in the background to hit when the month of Ancestry sub runs out and then I buy FMP for a month.

The Library will likely give you FMP access for free and I find it's less visits if you do the research first and save the links, but I'd much rather do it from home. Ancestry at our Library doesn't offer free access to Trees or personal records, just database searches results. If you want full info from Ancestry and utilise your own Tree and hints, you have to buy a sub.

None of them have all the records, you need to use all three to spread your chances of getting good info - FMP, FS and Ancestry..

Where is this real world and who lives there???? It's been so long since I visited there. It is a distant memory

lol it's the place these weird people live who want stuff done like washing or shopping or things fixed/sorted/altered. Mine also includes all the gene stuff that is not digital but still needs recording and checking and photographing and scanning and packing for long term storage.

For me ancestry is the one. I sometimes buy a month on FMP to get access to newspapers. I find FMP difficult to navigate, but thats just me.

I have just done the free trial on Ancestry. How often do they do the free weekend thing I have heard about?

I think when I did the ancestry free trial I got free trial on each of the three subscriptions levels. Having said that they were years apart with some monthly subs in between.

I agree. I only take advantage of the free FMP offers as I have found their website is a bit awkward to navigate. Maybe that is because I am used to Ancestry. Also, I have found records on Ancestry that don’t appear in FMP but I have heard of others who have found more in FMP.

Definitely there are records on FMP that aren't on Ancestry, either full documents or FS transcripts. I have often found an image on FMP that doesn't show up anywhere else. Some of the FMP search features are superior in both usefulness and results than the others, so I don't discriminate and use all of them.

Thanks all, your comments have all been taken on board.

It can depend on where your research is.

For Scottish census records I find the transcriptions at FMP are usually better with a bit more details transcribed. And FMP now has Northumberland BTs (many of which are free at FamilySearch, but can take a while to find if they're not indexed). FMP has the original Westminster parish records and quite a few Dorset ones which aren't on Ancestry.

On the other hand, Ancestry is better for West Riding parish records in Yorkshire, but FMP has them as BTs. But there are some West Riding parishes that are on FMP and not Ancestry.

If your ancestors in England were Catholic then FMP has a better collection, but there's still a lot of gaps.

Oh - and British India records are better at FMP. Found that an ancestor's brother left money in his will to his two daughters in 1820 - he described their mothers as 'pariah women'!

Thanks again. I've Scottish, mostly around Perthshire, Irish but not sure north or south yet, and mostly Leicestershire ancestors.Looks like I will have to use both to cover all the bases.

You could try just a month with FindMyPast and see what you can find.

Many of the Scottish records on both Ancestry and FMP are transcriptions, but many of these same transcriptions are available for free at FamilySearch.

Depending on when and where your family were in Perthshire they might be in the "other" (seceder) parish records, many of which have been available for a couple of years at ScotlandsPeople, but they're also available (unindexed) at FamilySearch via a FamilyHistory centre.

Accidentally hooked into a very, very distant relative who pointed me towards WikiTree. It's free and their aim is to have just the one tree so that each entry is unique.

Thanks to her, she has done more in depth digging than I could have or would have managed.

Never realised that through her, the family links from Norfolk to Thames and Auckland!
