John James Breen

#Post
1

Lived at 17 Cole Street, Wellington possibly till his death around the 1980's. He lived there with his 2nd wife Myra Colleen Beryl. John was a seaman and when he died he was cremated and his ashes were released out at sea.

Can someone pinpoint his date of death for me please and his birth, not sure if he born a kiwi or from the UK. Thank you in advance

This is Myra's death

2000/16512 Breen Myra Colleen Beryl 27 August 1914

because she was born in 1914 I am guessing this is John James Breen's death which has his birth date

1989/30789 Breen John James 30 March 1900

narrowing down for his death date it comes to 27 March 1989

The mother, Catherine Florence Symon, is buried at the Old Taita cemetery.

But Hutt City does not have a matching burial record for Myra C B Breen.

Well done Carbs51, yes that's him, I just got his marriage certificate today and yes his father is Thomas and he is a Tanner by trade, his mother is Susan nee Dogherty. What confuses me now is ... it states his birthplace is Sligo Ireland and yet he is Baptised according to above ^ in Lancashire.

Plus John James Breen was married here in NZ in 1924 and it states on this marriage cert he is a bachelor. His profession is Marine Fireman at the time of marriage in NZ so everything points to him so what happened to his first wife or did he just run away to NZ without her?

Not that I know of Daisy 86. Dorothea Sophia Lawless is his wife that I am tracing, married 28 June 1924.

I have had a look at the image.

Some of the writing is a little indistinct but it looks like "marine fireman" to me.

Unusual, but possible.
The 1911 census for a Thomas & Susan Breen of Liverpool, with a son John James Breen age 11 has this boy and all the rest of the family born in Liverpool, Lancashire. Father a dock labourer.

The 1901 census for John J Breen age 1 with parents Thomas and Susan also have the family born in Liverpool. Thomas Breen a leather tanner.

I think now Stock, he may have lied about his birthplace as he may have done a runner on his first wife Catherine Rimmer. When John James remarried in NZ, his second wife Dorothea died in her early 30's leaving behind 6 or 7 kids which all ended up in an Orphanage not to see their father again.

There was more than one John James Breen in NZ, but this may be your man:
Evening Star, Issue 23243, 17 April 1939

about maintenance for 4 children.

I note memorial notices by the Dunedin Evening Star for Dorothea Sophia by the Lawless family in up to at least 1946.

Sounds like him Stock, one of his daughters is still alive and maybe shocked to hear she may have half brothers and sisters over in England and that he may not have been legally divorced. Though she did track down her father when she turned 50, so he may have come clean. But I will pass on the information to her daughter.
Thanks for everyone's help so much appreciated.

is the go to site for England & Wales births less than 100 years ago. Can't find any Breen births 1920-1939 with mother's maiden name Rimmer.

Perhaps has Irish heritage. There are several Police Gazette (Ancestry) references to John James Breen born 1900 England. But he has tattoos which include "Erin go bragh".
According to Wikipedia it is used to express allegiance to Ireland.

Thanks Stock, I have verbally got confirmation from John James daughter, that John James was born in Liverpool and either John James father is Irish born or his fathers father. There is story there about Thomas chopping his own hand off with knife to win a race where the winner becomes a legal owner of land, after he chopped his hand off he threw the hand over the finishing line and of course won the land.
We decided not to tell John James daughter about the first English marriage and maybe John James bigamy.

Thanks h28skipper, but when Thomas son John James got married here in NZ in 1924 the second time, on his actual marriage cert which I now have. The cert states his mothers maiden name is Dogherty, Susan. But on this married cert he also said he was a bachelor and was born in Sligo Ireland, those two statements are false as hes got a wife in Liverpool and I have heard from John James daughter that she remembers he was from Liverpool. could he lie on the maiden name to throw everyone off his scent.
Bit of a rat bag this man.
