Help reading entry Robert Murray

#Post
1

Hi. Is anyone able to assist with reading the first entry in the left column of the attached please? I can only get as far as November 2 1704 Robert son to John Murray..... but can't make out the next couple of words.

Definition's not great.

____ in ffanns (double f is now capital F. Fanns may be Fans on the map today).

There are several other ffanns (if that's correct) on the same page.

Does this make it a bit easier to read with less glare. Still abysmal writing though. https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/1082162536.jpg

Are you able to crop it so we don't have the whole page.....just the top couple of entries. I am not able to get any magnification at all.

Have it magnified and got as far as you have. Do you have one that you can read clearly so you know what might come next?
Mother's name

What part of Scotland is this OP?

Earlston. Fans is a nearby place name.

Stab in the dark.
Smith in Fans.

Another stab...last word looks like Harris.

Many thanks for your help. The image is from Scotland's People, and unfortunately I can't get any better quality. Thanks for the suggestion it might be Fans, I think you're right as Fans is apparently a hamlet 5km from Earlston.

Thanks too for the suggestion it might be Smith in Fans. I thought it unlikely the occupation would be mentioned on a birth entry, but looking further down the page, there's another entry for a Taylor in Fans, so I think you're on the right track.

did you ask Scotland's People to send you a better copy, they will do it if you click on the Report an Issue button which sits just on your right above the image

Thank you, crab2, I didn't know that, that's very helpful.
