Pork Belly Smell

#Post
1

Hi, I bought a Pork Belly at the Supermarket on Friday with a best before date of tomorrow. It has a funny smell to it and I'm not sure if it is just the way it usually smells or if it is off? I'm slow cooking it at the moment, but not sure if I should just biff it?

We had two from PnS over the last couple of years that smelt funny and were off. If you don't think it's good, take it back to where you got it and get a refund.

I suspect there's nothing wrong with it

Nothing wrong with it, add some herbs and cook.

This ...although I can remember my grandmother rubbing meat that was not smelling right with vinegar, she didn't kill any of her grand kids & we still remember Nan's cooking!

Lol. This is one of the reasons I don't buy marinated meat.

My mother would rub vinegar and salt into the skin to make crackling, nothing to do with it being off though, it tasted delicious.

Of course it wasn't but the age old trick of butcher's putting meat, that is close to it's use by date, into a vinegar bath to extend its shelf life, was. Then along came marinading. Same effect.
