1 | I would like to know whether anyone can help out with the marriage of Philip Rail to Bridget Rail in 1877 in New York. Mt start point is the 1900 USA census for those two. From that record Bridget immigrated to USA in 1873. She married Philip Rail in 1877. As at 1990 USA Census she and Philip had 10 children and only three were then alive. Bridget was born in Ireland August 1855. Philip was also born in Ireland, in 1853. I would like to find out the name of each of Bridget's parents (in Ireland), their family names and where in Ireland they lived. I have done some searching in Ancestry and FindMyPast but cannot locate a USA Marriage record. Is anyone able to help me with the details that I seek? Many thanks for any help. mariner26 - 2019-06-12 14:39:00 |

So could be an attempt at O'Shea. Edited by shanreagh at 3:43 pm, Wed 12 Jun shanreagh - 2019-06-12 15:38:00 |

10 | There are various Shea/O'Shea (with parents as James and Bridget) combinations on this site mainly from Co Kerry. There are twins by the looks born in 1855 named Mary and Fintan. Do you have the names of the children born to Bridget and Philip who died - we have Michael, Mary & Josephine. There may be a tie up to a family called Stretton/Stratton. 16 | Oh Oh - been doing some more research. Between 1851 and 1880 New York State did not record any marriages. That relates to the 1847 State Law that required marriages be recorded, but that they rarely were. Now I know why there are hardly marriage records in Ancestry and FMP for the year that I focused on - 1877. Seems I am b..ggered! Many years ago I had problems getting any civil record for the marriage of my great grandparents (in 1874 - in New York) . I was very lucky that my great grandparents had entered the details of the church at which they were married when they registered on of their first generation NZ children. I got the certificate I wanted from the church. Don't; fret anymore folks. Thanks for your efforts. Oh - about the death entry of 1909 for Bridget Rail, I struggle with the information it contains. If the parents entered purport to be my great great grandparents. However, those two (James and Bridget) had children in 1846 (at their then ages of 44 and 35) and 1849 (at their then ages of 47 and 38). By 1855, when Bridget (Rail) was born my g g grandparents were 53 and 44. their first two children were baptised in the local Parish Church. But there is no record of a baptism for Bridget (Rail). The 6 year gap in having another child is unusual for Catholic parents. My G g Gparents lived all their lives in the same village and went to the same church over all that time. Looks to me there are errors in the records that connects Bridget Rail to me. Looks like another case of folk doing their family history research solely via Ancestry and purloining other persons entries for their use. Am off to Ireland in August so will talk this over with my cousin there - who still lives in the same village as my G g Gparents, and who is an expert in the local history. mariner26 - 2019-06-12 20:08:00 |
17 | On the 1892 New York state census on FS we have Philip Rayl 40 born Ireland Engineer Bridget Rayl 37 born Ireland Michael 14 Mary 12 Bessie 9 Joseph 7 Ella 3 James 2 Interestingly the children are all marked as being born in Ireland and therefore noted as being 'Alien.' If this is correct then the family must have come to the US between 1890 &1892. shanreagh - 2019-06-12 20:28:00 |
18 | Thanks for the advice. I am not sure where you have got the details about dates for Bridget Brown O'Shea/Shea/O'Day and James O'Shea/Shea/O'Day. Plus their children. Are they from this site? https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ I would prefer this site over records from Ancestry. Also the ages for the births of children are not totally unknown. My Mother was born to parents who were 44 & 56. Happy to help.....was just getting into it! shanreagh - 2019-06-12 20:43:00 |
