all the census records and other data that is stored on Ancestry if you are thinking of changing subscriptions?

Open a folder in file explorer on your computer, name folder 'family tree' close folder. Then go to your Ancestry tree.... open tree.
Click the tree name and on the drop-down menu select tree settings. Click export tree (gedcom). It will ask where do you want to save Gedcom, if you have a named folder already makes it easier. Save to that location.
Remember gedcom's do move images.

Alternatively, you can install the free Rootsmagic Essentials program on your computer and download your tree into it directly from Ancestry. A Gedcom does not include images, only the links to them in Ancestry. When you download into Rootsmagic it will include any images that you have attached to your tree, including census etc.

I think you meant to say "don't". GEDCOMs are text only files.

Thanx soo much for that info. I have just registered with Rootsmagic as you suggested and its GREAT !!! The latest version also saves all media. I had tried other programmes & was far from happy. Apparently there is a new version Rootsmagic 8 due out soon. Highly recommend this to all & once again many thanx for your post

Thanks to you all. After experimenting a bit, found out that Gedcoms DO NOT
save the docs, as also stated above.

Downloaded Family Tree Maker and synced to my Ancestry tree and EVERYTHING downloads to my hard drive. Do this on a daily basis now so nothing is lost.
