Asian food

#Post

I know this may sound unusual but I cant afford to take the kids overseas. I can drive a few hours up to Auckland to have a cultural experience. We have been watching some awesome YouTube channels, including (but not limited to) street food, and it has inspired us to take a trip up to Auckland for a cultural food experience. Where in Auckland can I go to eat Asian food where it is like I'm not in NZ? Im not interested in nice resturaunts and fine dining, just where the locals hang out. Thanks

This one has been...

auckland/grafton

but there are a number of cultural festivals, and that link is worth exploring.... I think there's a midwinter festival, and one in Spring...?

Albany is full of Asian restaurants, where their menus are firstly in asian and secondly in "english". Perhaps someone can vouch for specific restaurants that are worth trying. Black Rice in Albany is really good, but is more a dining experience.rather than street food style. We do have a fabulous one in Browns Bay , Asian Wok, the Gentleman waiter there is very friendly and helpful another in Browns bay that has rave reviews is Ramen Tarken (sp).. if you do find good ones please do let us know, would love to try more but being vegetarian is amazingly hard in some restaurants!

For the best Chinese dumplings in Auckland try Mr Zhou's in Mt Eden Road. It is not really near any other Asian style restaurants but it is frequented a lot by Chinese people.

There is also an area of cheap and cheerful Chinese restaurants in Dominion Road (where Mr Zhou started his first dumpling shop and which has been taken over and still makes the same dumplings), in the shopping precinct West of Potters Park. I think you can get Peking Duck in that area but if not try the big Chinese grocery shop opposite the old railway station in the Strand, downtown.

Is the Mercury Plaza still open? The venue looked crappy but the food was yummy, authentic and very good value for money

Awe buzzy, dumplings are one of my fav, wish I lived up there. Never really get to Auck, usually just the airport when going overseas....
We have not got a dumpling shop here, and I love them. Wish someone would open one....

There is, or was a fabulous Asian eating building in lower Hobson Street. It had many different ethnic cuisines. Cheap as chips, and now I'm starting to drool, just thinking about the place.

Best noodles in Auckland (so sez many) = Eden Noodles cafe. Not a leisurely experience though - There is always a massive queue, and as is typical of authentic Asian eateries, they'll expect you to eat and go!

Another option is an eating tour - I did this one: http://eatauckland.co.nz/tours/ - the "Balmoral – More Than Dumplings Chinese Food Tour." It was a lot of fun and I got to try food I might not normally have thought to order.
