Alison Holst soup recipe

#Post
1

I am hoping someone can help. I have tried to google but cannot find the recipe I am looking for. All of my cookery books are in storage and I cannot access. The recipe I am looking for is carrot and red lentil soup. There are other recipes online but not Alisons. It was one of the older Alison books. Thank you

I found this, but you'd have to guess the method:

Red lentil, carrot and kumara soup from 100 Great Ways to Use Slow Cookers and Crockpots by Simon Holst and Alison Holst
Ingredients

carrots
celery
chilli powder
coriander seeds
ground cumin
red lentils
onions
kumara
turmeric
vegetable stock

This is why it's ingredients only:
**Where’s the full recipe - why can I only see the ingredients?
At Eat Your Books we love great recipes – and the best come from chefs, authors and bloggers who have spent time developing and testing them.

We’ve helped you locate this recipe but for the full instructions you need to go to its original source.**

But, having found which book it's in, someone may be able to type out the method (sorry, I don't have that particular book)

purdie69, I have most of Alison Holst's books, including her earliest/older books and I have a master index of most the recipes in those books but as yet it does not include all of the older ones, so do you have any idea of the name of the book that the recipe was in? :-))

I have this book and she has a blurb at the start of the recipe that says this is the slow cooker version of one of my favourite soups so I am guessing this is the recipe you might be after. If is I am happy to type out the recipe for you

I seem to remember the cover being mainly red (not her best of book I dont think) I cannot find a photograph of the book to assist. It is a really lovely recipe and so simple to make.

the one in her 'best of' book is called red lentil soup and is the one I said which has the optional orange rind.

I did yesterday and I think that is probably what the OP was asking for. So good of you to take the time to photograph and post on here.

purdie69 I have had another quick look and found the recipe with kumara in it, also a creamy lentil and vegetable soup, so could that be it or is/was it actually called Carrot and Red Lentil Soup??
IMO 'tis very annoying to not be able to access a fav. recipe so I understand how much you want this one and when I get a chance I'll have another look for you. :-))

One i make may help.
The recipe is from Alison Holst.
1 cup red lentils, 25g butter, 1 or 2 onions, 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, 1 or 2 carrots, 1 or 2 stalks of celery, 1tsp ground or not cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp ground coriander, 1/2 tsp garam masala and paprika, 2 -4 Tblsp cream, 2 tblsp cornflour, 1 cup of frozen peas about 1 cup of chopped tomato, 1 tblsp sugar, 1 – 11/2 tsp of salt about 1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs.

Measure the lentils and 1 litre of hot tap water into a bowl to soften them. Melt the butter in a large pot, add chopped garlic, carrots, celery. Add spices, cook over moderate heat stiring occasionally for 2 – 3 min but don’t let the veg go brown. Add the lentils and hot water, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
Puree all, or part, or none of the mixture, what ever you choose then bring back to the boil.
Mix as much of the cream (yoghurt works well too) as you like to a paste with the cornflour and a little extra water and pour into the soup. Add peas and the chopped tomato. Add sugar, salt to taste and the fresh herbs.
Serve sprinkled with Parmesan if you like, with some hot toast or a nice bread.

Purdie69 this is the one you are after.
Half cup red lentils, 2 med carrots, 1med onion, 1 stalk celery, 1 and a half cups water, 2 teaspoon instant chicken stock.
While they cook, make thin white sauce with 1 tbsp butter, 1 tbsp flour, 2 cups milk.
Mouli veges , add white sauce gradually, reheat gently, season well.
Recipe from Alison Holsts Family Cookbook first published 1987.

I was thinking about Alison the other day. Does anyone know how she is?

I don't know.

I always think of her with gratitude when I make 4 different Christmas cake recipes she created each year. I have always appreciated how clear her and easy to follow her instructions are.
