I now think I know what it was. She married a Fred Clark around 1937 ish, The marriage didn't last long. Then she married my Dad in 1946 I suspect she never got a divorce from Fred. Is there any way of checking this? She was Rita Maisie Phillips.

Thank you all, your kindness and time is very much appreciated. No wonder that marriage didn't last. Mum told me he was scum. After saying that, she should have divorced the creep before she married again.

If the man went down for bigamy, your mum would not have needed a divorce. She was free to marry since her marriage to him was exposed as fake by 1945 the year before her 'second' marriage. My sympathies are for her having got caught up with him.

Except without the actual details, the bigamy could have been because he married someone while still married to Phillips and that marriage would have been annulled.
