There really isn't anything much like miso. Marmite or Vegemite would contribute a similar flavour but you would need to use less.

white Miso is available in Countdown, so probably all supermarkets. (It is in a clear plastic tub in the international section and it is not white).

Why would you want to substitute something else for the Miso? It wouldn't be Miso soup if you did that. It would be Marmite or Vegemite or Chicken powder stock soup.

Miso soup is very specific in health and protein composition.

If you want to make miso soup buy some miso paste. 1.26 billion Japanese can't be wrong.

You can buy small sachets (12) of miso soup from supermarket in the soup aisle. Like cup a soup but its miso. I've seen it at Countdown last time I did a shop there (awhile ago now)

Seaweed, bonito flakes, garlic chives, leafy green vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, small amounts of fish, chicken or other meats. I even make it using bone broth.

Miso soup is not a thick hearty soup like ham and pea or vegetable. It is more delicate.

Remember miso is a protein all by itself. Japanese people also like to add tofu.

There is an excellent locally made miso which can be bought on line and also at specialty food stores such as Vetro and Farro. It is a raw wheat-free miso and really delicious. If you want to retain the probiotic virtues of miso don't heat it.

Here's a link. https://miso.co.nz/

I agree with urban hippie miso. I bought some a few years back at Nelson Market and it is excellent. Mine is still delicious.
