Town of Ohakune - Historical records

#Post
1

Does anybody know where these records are held. I sent an email to the Ruapehu District Council in Taumarunui with a reply that was not very helpful. They did give me the name of a person who has written a history of the town however.

What I am looking for is records and/or photos. DH's Great Uncle Edgar Larkin was Town Clerk there in around 1925 and his daughter lived there until her death, having married Peter Te Karu (second marriage for him). Peter was a JP in the town and Peter and Winnie ran a business there in the 1960's.. Surely there must be some records etc somewhere. Any ideas appreciated. Capricorngirl

Only just starting on this particular member of the family and his descendants.Have some sketchy info, but thought there would be something in the town records, hence the request. Don't know DigitalNZ - Photos?
Will scan some Papers Past meantime to see if there is anything. Many thanks for your suggestions and reply. Capricorngirl

Since perused DigitalNZ and Papers Past - couple of snippets - as a police constable in Petone and Greytown and also JP in Ohakune. These facts were already known however. Also knew he lost his wife in the 1918 flu epidemic while living in Greytown. Capricorngirl

Thanks stock -know of the other daughters and their background. In touch with granddaughter of Peter Te Karu from first marriage, and awaiting further family info from her. interested however in the Ohakune era - 1920's and 1930's and Edgar's records(influence?) in his position as Town Clerk and later JP. Hi Capricorngirl

Went to the Ohakune District Council Office at 37 Ayr Street, Ohakune years ago (about 10 from memory ) Asking about my mother's family ( Baker) I was given a location where in the Cemetery where my Uncle and Grandfather were buried. Also died in 1918 flu epidemic. Died same day.
Asked if they had any other records. The lady took me into a walk in safe .
There were piles of old newspapers there.Papers about 6' high. Not sure if it was a bank before. Had a good look through but found nothing relating to my family. Grandfather worked for the railways.
There were interesting items in the papers about cure for the flu epidemic ( yeah right). Don't know if they still have them or have been moved somewhere else. Hopefully not dumped.

Have you still got the name of the person who wrote the history of the town.
Cheers

Try the Ohakune Library, and then also the Raetihi Council office.

I did get a further reply from the Ruapehu District Council suggesting that I contact the following = enquiries@archivecentral.org.n-
z. They also gave me a phone number for this organization - will try on Monday. It does seem odd nobody knows where historical records and photos are held. Capricorngirl

Archives Central stores and manages the official archives of the Ruapehu District Council. It's a facility jointly owned by all the small councils in the region. Their database (www.archivescentral.org.nz) lists minute books, valuation rolls and balance sheets for the Ohakune Borough Council back to the 1920s.

Peter & Winnie Te Karu had a dairy in the main st. They had a son William who worked as a clerk in Ohakune Post Office in the late 1950s.
I think Marilyn George of Ohakune did a history of Ruapehu College & possibly of other parts of Ohakune. That was in 2005 at the time of the Ruapehu College 50th reunion. Not sure if she is still in Ohakune

Hi starseeker, Yes you are right about the dairy - met them there around 1969 and their son (he is still alive by the way). DH's sister and her husband were teachers at Ruapehu College from about 1967 thru to 1973. I will scout round to see if a copy of Marilyn George's book is available at the library. Thanks for your reply. Capricorngirl
