Doesn't like Southland cheese rolls?
Made some to have with soup tonight...didn't enjoy them at all....I've made them years ago, liked them then, but I doubt I'll bother again.

I don‘t like them, too rich for me.

Never tried them - they always look a bit sh*t to me. I also don’t understand the use of sweet products like evaporated milk in savoury recipes, or the use of soup powder for anything other than making soup.

Depends what recipe you use and how you toasted them AM sure everyone would like them. It’s ALL in the TOASTING With butter after that

It’s the crunch and butter that make it really

Why would you comment if you haven’t tried them go figure

Because they look and sound so unappealing

Yes this and also the filling needs to be creamy and cheesy. Had one in Dunedin at Easter and it was disgusting, the outside was dry and hard, the filling was like warm, bland glue. Yuk.

Yum yum, pigs bum! I have just made a loaf of famous cheese rolls for the freezer, nothing nicer once in a while on a Winters day with a bowl of steaming hot soup. butter dripping down your chin and fingers. Yumbo!

Evaporated milk isn't sweet. I guess you're thinking of condensed milk.
Cheese rolls are great!

I find it sweet - I know the difference.

Could you make them with normal cheese sauce and no soup mix?

Don't moan if you don't like the recipe, here is a recipe that I have just tried recently. If it curdles (mine did first attempt) let the recipe go cold and then spread on your bread slices. Cover the whole slice and roll up, don't take the crusts off
2oz butter
1 lge Tblsp flour
1 large teasp onion stock powder
1 cup milk
1 cup tasty cheese
One loaf white sandwich bread (if you prefer brown, use that)

Melt butter, add flour and stock and stir in.
Add milk bit by bit and stir till thickened.
Take off heat and stir in cheese
Spread and roll up! Good to freeze.
Best baked in oven and buttered while hot.
Can use a sandwich press but don't squash them flat. set it for toast.

Might try them with this recipe instead then but use mustard powder and cayenne pepper like I put in my usual cheese sauce

Cheese rolls are delish with thick homemade pumpkin soup. I make up a couple of loaves of bread into cheese rool, and keep them in the freezer...also have a supply of homemade pumpkin soup. Good easy meal for anytime, or when friends come for an impromptu meal.

There are no rules, it's all a matter of choice.

Sarah, I make a similar filling which I use in toasties, rolls or pasties which is just cream cheese (plain or flavoured), grated cheese, chopped onions and S&P.

Well isn’t it all about the traditional recipe?

And also because the OP was asking if anyone else dislikes them so that entitles you to give your opinion if you think that even the recipe for them looks like something you would not like.

And just to add in my voice. I agree with your comments.

Apparently everyone has their own 'traditional recipe' so no one agrees with anyone else. It is a debate that will rage for eternity down the SI.

LOl. Darling. We don't think about the South Island or their cheese rolls at all unless asked.

Oh my....didn't realise I'd cause a stir.
But, cheers, glad to know it's not just me, hubby enjoyed them tho.
Yes, I find the evaporated milk sweet, and didn't like the soup flavour either...id rather a cheese and onion toasty any day.
The recipe Rainrain posted sounded better, although I don't have onion stock powder....and I doubt I'd buy it just to try another version.

Actually as a person from Southland who makes really good cheese rolls I don't believe there is a debate, on who makes better ones. Fundraisers selling cheese rolls do well. So nice in the freezer. I use reduced cream, onion powder, grated onion and tasty cheese. Mum would use boiling water to mix the grated cheese and onion.

I am not a fan as I find them too rich but others around me love them. It is an easy thing to make and freeze and can be served up quickly.
