Le Creuset, expensive but wonderful, will last a lifetime, several lifetimes I should imagine!

I have used an enameled cast iron one from Briscoes. And a standard Warehouse metal pot, with metal lid. Don't need anything expensive.

This...they are brilliant.

Any well-seasoned cast iron casserole, enamelled or not. If it is enamelled be very careful not to "shock" it by putting cold liquids into a very hot pan. Bits of the enamel crack and fall off into your food (as I discovered - result - ruined food and a pot you can't cook in, ever again).
You can find all sorts of cookware to do the job you want, even in second hand stores. Keep your eyes open.

Same here. Once you you get them seasoned up (if cast iron) they work just as well as the really expensive ones. Can also use the camp oven style that the outdoor stores have as well. One thing about cast iron though is NEVER use it to make anything with vinegar as this does something (permantly) to the iron which makes the food taste really funny. I ruined a really useful little casserole this way. I tried and tried to get rid of the taste but in the end had to concede defeat and put it in the scrap pile.

...I have a warehouse one at the bach, BUT the handles/lid knob are plastic, so that can't go in the oven. will have a great time shopping for the right one.

I agree with the Le Creuset suggestion. They are terrifically expensive but are unbeatable. Shop around on line as prices vary, and sometimes unpopular colours are cheaper.

I bought a Hampton and Mason set of pots, a frypan and stockpot, all with metal handles, from Briscoes in one of their sales (Boxing Day, I think), for $99.00 - one of the best buys I ever made. The pots are very heavy based, excellent heavy glass-and-metal lids, and can go stovetop to oven, and the pan is excellent for one of my favourite quick (but spectacular) desserts - Tarte Tatin (or Bananes, or Ananas, or whatever...). Worth consideration....
