Sunbeam Pie makers (4 pie size)

#Post
1

Has anyone got one? Thinking of buying one and would be interested in the pros & cons, had a snack size one years ago but really didn't use it much. Have looked at the $29 Kmart one but the pie size is much to small even though it does 4 at a time.

If you go to Briscoes website there are reviews usually on the appliances, might be some help.

Have had a lot of use out of the KMart one; it works as well as did the Sunbeam two pie maker when we had that. Great for using up left overs and making mini quiche and would replace it of it broke down. The Sunbeam 4 pie maker we have used a lot less and now thinking of passing it on to another family; it is probably good for a family with teenagers to make their snacks.

This Facebook Page - Kmart Pie Maker Recipes, Tips and Ideas Australia - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1736740153030725/?fref=nf seems to be popularizing pie makers immensely at the moment.

I gave my pie maker away after only a couple of uses. Too much fuss and faffing about for very little filling under a large 'hat'.

Thanks everyone, given me something to work on before making a final decision.

A pie tray and an oven, or a sandwich press could do the same job. Do you need more appliances in your kitchen?

Yes!! - just had my kitchen redone and now have heaps of drawers to fill.
Seriously though, as I don't like store bought pies I thought the pie maker would be a quick alternative for home-made pies and not have to heat up the oven.

Have just bght my 2nd Zip piemaker from Briscoes half price sale. Belong to the k Mart Pie maker recipes on F/Bk , also helpful with hints. Have made pies of all sorts (today savoury mince & apple ones) muffins, scrolls. Easy to make litle cakes with the Countdown plain pack cakemix. Mix the ingreds, put into piemaker, ready 6 mins later, cool & ice. My Zip one is deep which is good for us, others too shallow.

Love our pie makers, really handy to use up small amounts of casseroles, chilli or curries. Would definitely replace if ours gives up!

Mix a can of soda with the cake mix , don't over mix . Then pop into your pie maker for about 6-8mins. Vanilla and creaming soda is a really nice combination

Sounds really nice, will have to try that one. Bought a 4up Sunbeam at Briscoes half price sale last Sunday, thought I was going to have a play during the week but husband had other ideas so it's still in its box.
Thanks to everyone for their input, all comments much appreciated.

Hi bubbles, what did you find was fiddly, was it getting the pastry base in the maker while it was so darned hot?

You can do all this fillings in a toasted sandwhich without the extra fat content from pastry

Btw, I counted 52 differnt electric “ needed “ gadgets avaiable in Briscoes

I gave mine away as didn't use it much, bought for $2 at a GS. I prefer to use my Breville snack creations as you can do much more with it.

Do you HAVE to use pastry in the pie maker. Would it work with bread, or wraps...

Nothing wrong with a pie maker and they are quick and convenient. In saying that I gave mine to my daughter as she is working shift work.
Yes bread can be used in it, I never did but I know other people used bread.

Is it not possible to use the maker to form the pies with cold filling, take them out, bring to temperature and put back in?

That would be classified as 'fiddly' ...wouldn't it?
imo that would be just as fiddly as making small pies in tins.
A gadget for making pies should make it simpler & quicker ...personally I'd rather make small pies the conventional way ... make pastry, , fill, bake 10 at a time in the oven & bingo, heaps for a meal or three & some in the freezer.
But I think the op wants simple & quick & fair enough.
OP, I have a 4 pie maker & I use it very occasionally & using it as a toastie type machine, with bread as the casing.
I thought it would be the best thing to have ...but no, I was disappointed with the 'pies' that it made.

I actually start my pies off with a cold piemaker then it heats up. Filling is always cold. today made cup cakes, no paper cases, all good other day made lambingtons, made the cup cakes, cooled, rolled in half set jelly then rolled in coconut. Have frozen them when needed will cut in half & cream. Easy pesy! Alway use C/Down puff pastry sheets, but have used wraps or bread. Have put crustless bread in, piece of bacon optional & egg. Cook 3 mins. Yum.

You have obviously mastered your pie maker ...I'm impressed.
Well done, you.
I'll have to use your ideas, but cup cakes are not on my list ;o)

Used my pie maker first time today using leftover roast chicken, peas and gravy. Thought the pies turned out ok but not impressed with the store-bought pastry, one lot was Edmonds (I expected that to be really good) and the other was Countdown's SR brand - very little flavor, I might as well have been eating thin cardboard. What do you all recommend as the best store-bought pastry that gives good results as well as good flavor?

I have had the Sunbeam 2 pie maker since the 80's. My trick is to roll out and cut our the pastry "rounds" and pop them in a tupperware container with the blue plastic you get from pastry packets in between. They then take less than five minutes to defrost on the bench when you are ready to cook. I precook the fillings (favourite is chicken mushroom and ham) in containers the same size as servings for 2 or four of us, usually 2 each. These too are very quick to defrost. You can also use left over casserole, bacon and egg etc. I have a small benchtop oven on the bench that has a "keep warm" setting. I just bung an enamal dish in there, make the pies and keep them warm in there. I can make up enough for four in the same amount of time as cooking veges to go with them so its a very quick meal for us. Lovely in cold weather, or for picnic lunches to take out.

I have used them all and recommend the Edmonds Puff bake for pies. I love making pies, but you have to use the right pastry. The cheaper ones just don't work!

Made heaps of pies for going to relatives for Easter (steak, ham & egg, apple and apple & berry) all very successful. 16 year old grandson loved the steak ones so much (and he's a very picky eater) he decided we should have "pie night at Grandma's" every fortnight - high praise indeed.
Thanks to everyone for your comments and input.
