A question about NZ BDM records

When someone died in 1906 and their details were recorded for the death registry, what would have been used their proof of age? ie if the age is set to 45 on someone who was an immigrant in the 1880s with no family left but little children, wife deceased and few in-law family to refer to for actual info if they even new it, was a guestimate of age from the in-laws used?

Yes. More so if the age was adjusted to obtain a free passage when immigrating and that benchmark maintained afterwards.

Yes especially if it is a 3rd party that didn't know the person which is why you take age at death with a grain of salt

I thought so, the age at death is out by some years, based on the age at the 1871 census, another document lacking documented credibility. At least the census age matches up with the ages of his siblings.

Do NZ marriage certificates of the late1890s era have DOB or age of individuals being married on them?

Look at the cemetery and newspaper records too. They might have another version of the age.

Marriage registrations will have the claimed age and not date of birth.

I've got everything off Paperspast that I can find. A few death/funeral notices that were all essentially the same info. All the family left was his wife's sister and her husband. Parents-in-law long gone, kids aged 5 down to 2 already in the orphanage for a year. Their god parents were mostly friends of the family but likely wouldn't know his date of birth. That's why I asked if age or DOB was on a marriage certificate as at least that might be close to correct.

Neither of them are in the NZ Cemetery records.

Oh the death notice says 45, which is probably given by the same people that led his age to be recorded as 45 on the death registry. From the other sources, he was supposedly only 42. I don't have access to his marriage entry to see what was put on there.
