I bought glacial acetic acid from a pharmacy, could be your best bet.
Good luck.

I've tried my local pharmacy who no longer sell it. Nor does the health food shop or Bin Inn. Before I ring around I'm hoping someone local can give me a short cut.

My listing quota is full however I've made a note to put some up tomorrow for you- how much do you need? I presume this is for cake decorating or similar?

Thanks peterd11. This is for tomato sauce making, replacing the vinegar. According to the recipe I only need approx 50gm (1.5oz). I make sauce every year so if this come out the way it's supposed I'll need more. Supposed to taste like Watties.

Ah, that recipe! It makes great sauce.(Red, red tomato sauce?)
I get mine from the chemist at enormous expense, but you may be able to get it from a cake decorating supplier.

You can buy Acetic acid from the supermarket in powder form. Dissolve in boiling water to give the correct dilution, ie Glacial is 33%. Keeps for eons too!

Why would you want your homemade sauce to taste like a commercially produced one?Home made is unique to every cook and should taste and look exactly that.

Vinegar is only diluted Acetic Acid, after all (about 5% acetic acid, by law). When we make pickles and sauces we concentrate it by long boiling, which changes the flavour of the other ingredients as well. If it is the recipe I'm thinking of, it doesn't need as much cooking as the usual homemade tomato sauce, and therefore, tastes fresher and has a brighter colour.
