Perfit seals 25% fail

#Post
1

Is anyone else having problems getting perfit seals to work? I've been preserving for 50 years using the same technique (sterilize everything, everything scalding hot, fill jars and seal).

This year I'm having a 25% failure rate. The jar rims are intact and clean, the screw bands are in good condition, the only thing that has changed is the seals, which I buy new every time. Carelessness definitely isn't a factor.

Anyone else?

I've had problems with them from time to time. They don't seem to fit my (older, because I, too, have been preserving a long time) jars very well, and I have to be extremely careful to place them in exactly the right position. I also think that the rubber seals appear a little thinner and harder, though that may just be my perception.

Thanks everyone for the input. I suspect the seals being thinner and the jars being the old Agee Special style may be the problem. I had had a fair stock of the older, thicker seals which I reused and have only just started using the new flimsy ones.

Thanks for the link to the faq coral, interesting to see that they admit their lids are very thin and buckle unless you develop a new way of handling the seals and screws by "trial and error" rather than suggesting a standard method of use. A bit shocking to see a frank admission on the website of a product not fit for purpose unless you fiddle around with it and wait to see the result.

I've bought some Ball seals, I've liked them in the past and reuse them as well. Perfit and I are finished, I'm afraid. I've also bought some Ball seals for my daughters.

American jar lids, Ball brand. (or Kerr brand, same company.

Moore Wilson in Wellington have sets of lids and bands, which I bought because some of my old bands needed replacing anyway. They don't have lids separately this year as far as I could see, though they have in the past. I'll have to look for a cheaper source of the lids alone over the next year, I won't need any more for this year.

Millies kitchen has them, though they're pretty pricey there.

I've just done 10 more jars without a failure with the new seals, so looking good.

Interesting to hear I'm not alone with Perfit seal failures. I had given up preserving and freeze only now. Might give the Ball brand seals a try if I can find some.

Update - I've now done the final 20 jars with Ball seals, no failures.

I've done about 20-30 jars last month with Perfit seals/Agee jars - all worked fine.

P.S. Last year I read on their website about not tightening the lids too much, I followed their instructions and some did fail.
HOWEVER! This year I ignored all that utterly and tightened them the usual way - 100% success lol.
I use an electric preserving machine, but doubt that makes a difference.

Snapperheadrkp, are those seals that would fit the Nescafe Original jars??. I have been trying to source these but they say they are deleted. Used to be able to get them years ago.
