I have had a few mistakes corrected on NZBDM after finding and proving the errors. However this time I can't for the life of me find the birth of Thomas Aloysius Mahar born 1884 in Lyttelton.
All his siblings are there but under 3 different spellings - Mahar, Maher and Marr! Daniel and Margaret (nee McCormick) are the parents. Mahar is the correct spelling. Can anyone give some clues into finding Thomas's birth in BDM so I can have these mistakes all corrected. Thanks.

I would say this is his birth on bmd, looks like his middle name was changed...

Yes . I think you're right. His name is Thomas Aloysius and I did see the Augustus one there.
All his siblings are listed too. Under Maher and Marr. So I think I'll have to buy that birth cert to show them the mistake(s).

Could of also been the transcription of somebodys scrawling handwriting or even what the person who initially recorded the record 'heard' rather than what the (usually) parent 'said'. I have an example of this in my family, which required sorting out before a young traveller could obtain the visas they were entitled to due to parental/grand parental birthplaces.

I think it's a transcription error ..Aloysius ... Augustus.
You actually helped me with an error about 5 yes ago ...the name of my ancestors was Foulds and you found it under Donald. I got it changed! Thanks again for that one and today's help.????

Often the accents from other countries make it seem like it is spelt that way rather than the correct way and as you say could well be a transcription mistake
