Do you know where he is buried. Sometimes that info is on the tombstone.

Yup, but it isn't. Buried at Waikanae Cemetery.

Are you sure he served in WWII? Was he living in NZ when he enlisted? I can't find an entry for him on the Online Cenotaph http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/s

No - He is in uniform on his headstone photo. With that said, doesn't mean he served in WWII. He fits the age however. Could have served under a different country?

Can we see the photo to establish the military uniform?

What country has those buttons / insignia on the lapel?

Is a tie unusual for a New Zealand serviceman?

I would apply for Leonards war record from Trentham camp. I think the uniform is later than WW2 more like Korea. Just fill out the form as best as you can, you will need to include the burial records and photo of the headstone. Your first file each 12 month period is free.

He appears to be wearing a USMC uniform. Unable to see ribbons or medals in that photo.

The link in message 7 has good definition. The lapel buttons might be recognised by those in the know.

He looks American just doesn't look NZ or UK and he doesn't have a NZ Services headstone

Trying to pin down when he might have arrived in NZ, if it turns out he wasn't born here.

The first NZ electoral roll I can find Leonard George Phillips on is from 1954. He's a builder living at 18A Aurora Tce in central Wellington. His wife Joan is also listed at that address but she appears on the general ER while Leonard is on a supplementary one.

They're both listed at 18A Aurora Tce in the 1957 general ER. In the 1963 ER Leonard and Joan Phillips are living at 10A Walter Rd in Lowry Bay, Lower Hutt. His occupation's still builder.

Checked the general and supplementary ERs for Wellington Central in 1949 and Leonard's not at the 18A Aurora Tce address. I can't find him listed anywhere on the rolls for that Wellington Central electoral district.

Nothing that I can confirm. Joan was born in NZ (she is related to my wife). Maybe he came to NZ after WWII? Regardless of whether he served or not.

I also came across Leonard George Phillips in the RAF (Flying Pilot) on the WWII roll but the uniform looks nothing like it.

Thanks will do. I just noticed that he isn't showing on the Birth list on BDM. Likely not born here?

Could have emigrated to NZ post-war. I got this information from Owen from the TalkWW2 forum
