Rutherfords from the Nelson district

| A DNA match (estimated 4th to 6th at Ancestry, but it will be AT LEAST 5th cousins) has come up with some people in the US who are Rutherford descendants. Their ancestor might be the sister of George Rutherford who emigrated with his family from Dundee in 1842 (but he was originally from Perthshire) If you're descended from this family I'd be keen to make contact to see whether we can determine whether we are related to these matches through their Rutherford maternal side or not. We have at least three descendants of one set of our Perthshire ancestors who are matching the people in the US. Fortunately the US matches don't have a lot of Scottish ancestry so it does look as if the link is from around Perth, and the villages to the west and south. 5 | I have a Ted Price who is related to John Rutherford of Bideford out of Masterton he is now in Australia... I put him in touch with a newly found cousin also in Aus, but now back in NZ, who is connected to John's brother Charles who was in early Carterton. all from Roxborough. North of England. if you would like to contact me off site for the email address please to contact Ted, he has a terrific lot of history of the Rutherfurd/ford folk.. sounds interesting from what I was told... I do have a book somewhere which has Ernest Rutherford family mentioned. I am not related, just interested in early settlers in New Zealand. thank you Clareville Taphophile.. neich - 2018-04-30 15:33:00 |
| Thanks for looking neich. They don't sound like they're the Rutherfords I'm after, as Roxburgh is quite some distance from Perth. 4pc - 2018-04-30 19:54:00 |
| I must look up the atlas and see where the areas are.. haven't been up that way since 1960s. The Rutherfurd family member I know off had no idea that her ancestor who as in Carterton had a brother at Bideford until Ted price told me about his Rutherfurd family... neich - 2018-05-01 11:28:00 |

| On Facebook, there is a group called Top of the South. [Nelson Marlborough etc] Rutherfords are mentioned in there. Maybe worthwhile joining and seeing who you meet. daisygirl - 2018-05-07 14:18:00 |

| I'm presuming that you know that Ernest Rutherford was born in Brightwater, south of Nelson, and there is a lot of information about him and his family at a memorial on the site of his birthplace. The local people have always had a low-key attitude to this history, I suppose because of his scientific work. If you do not know this, then you will get information from the Nelson Museum and Isel House in Stoke (Genealogical Society library was there). The labaratory where Ernest Rutherford did his early work was a basement at Canterbury University. It is now part of the Arts Centre near the Museum in Christchurch. I imagine that it has been restored as has the building which was immediately above it I did have some documents relating to Ernest's schooling etc, but since leaving the area I have passed all of them on to Isel House. It is possible that they went astray because they have never acknowledged the documents' arrival??? Forgive me if you already know all of this. heslington - 2018-05-24 19:42:00 |

| Im trying to see if the family stories are correct of having direct line cousins to Ernest Rutherford. Alice Mills daughter of John Mills and Sarah Annie who was a Harvey. From Pelorus Sounds. No luck yet. vonkrum - 2019-04-27 09:42:00 |

| My ex husband is s direct descendant of Ernest, large photo is on the wall in his house. I've answered this querie before on this message board, is it a repeat?? mony8 mony8 - 2019-04-27 13:15:00 |
| I don't think this is a repeat query. A while ago I noticed that gtgtgt-grandchildren of John Stewart (born about 1811 at Clathy in Perthshire, which is very near Findogask) and Christina Rutherford (born about 1814 in Dron) are matching a few members of my family. These gtgtgt-grandchildren only had a tree back to grandparents so I've worked my way up. Because they also have ancestry from other parts of Britain and Europe I was able to focus on their Scottish ancestry, hence how I've narrowed it down to the relationship either being via John or Christina. Some of the mutual ancestors of my relatives who are matches are from an area roughly bounded by Forteviot, Tibbermore and Abernethy. A year ago I hadn't narrowed it down quite so closely. So it's definitely the right area. 4pc - 2019-04-27 17:40:00 |
| The names you mention relate to my match to George Rutherford whose parents were John and Jean, with Christina from Dron being John’s sister. clawed2 - 2019-04-27 20:30:00 |
| Should be daughter not sister clawed2 - 2019-04-28 06:17:00 |
| Thanks clawed. Yes, I spotted that Christina was John's sister and that George was born in Forgandenny. Whatever the DNA link is with Christina's descendants, it's before 1800 and either through her or her husband John. 4pc - 2019-05-13 15:34:00 |
