Fruit and marshallow kebabs - Recently for a bring-a-plate supper someone had made small kebabs with fresh fruit (kiwifruit and strawberries) and marshmallows - with the green and red of the fruit + white marshmallows they looked lovely and Christmassy and were a really really popular item. :-))

Saw a picture of blueberries on a skewer - novel way to make an expensive fruit go further (they were alongside strawberries drizzled with chocolate). You'd need the short skewers.

I have made a trio of sorbets to go with fruit salad for those who are wanting a lighter option but also will have a big home made pav with raspberries and blueberries and a drizzle of white chocolate and a very light melt in mouth lemon cheesecake. Still deciding if I will make my popular chocolate mousse which could be presented in sherry glasses. Another option for a tasting platter would be profiteroles. As a change from chocolate truffles my family likes apricot balls

This reminded me of the 'dessert' I did last Christmas. I threaded mini marshmellows & blueberries onto those umbrellas you use to decorate drinks with. Really easy to do & look great.

I'm not so sure about the fondants Ellie. They can become chocolate muffins in the blink of an eye! And after a few glasses Christmas bubbles they could turn into chocolate rock-cakes.

That's such a cool idea and very much Christmas themed. I love it. And not too heavy either.

I do a large platter of "apres-ski" every year.
Some nuts, of course (brazils, cashews, pistachios), some home-made truffles (brandy, apricot), some prune truffles (thank you Jo Seagar), Turkish delight, figs, baby mince pies and shortbread. You can either make them well in advance or just open a packet for the figs and nuts etc. Nothing challenging, just Christmas treats.
Because by then we will already have had our Christmas pud and only need a nibble or two to see us through the rest of day.

Mini trifles are easy to assemble and look great. Also, little cream puffs with choc sauce drizzled over the top and perhaps a dollop of cream.

I did mini desserts last year and Im doing them again this year. Last year was mini xmas mince pies, mini bonafee pies, chocolate raspberry brownie, peanut butter truffles, jellys in shot glasses, truffle in shot glasses, choclate strawberries, I brought mini brandy cases and had ambrossa in them, jaffa mousse. This year so far I have made chocolate cups which need something in them, I have made ginger biscuits in the shape of stars to sit on the side of a shot glass that has lemon silk in it, mini xmas pies, young ones want volka shots this year, also made the base for mini cheesecakes. and also mini pav's. Its lots of fun and you get to try more things,.

I use the mini muffin tins, its a long job, especially if some of the bases need to be blind baked.

No recipe required - unfilled chocolate sponge roll from Countdown, whipped cream and chocolate ganache. Unroll the sponge, fill with cream and roll back up. Cut a piece off the end diagonally and attach to the side. Cover with chocolate ganache, use a fork to make "bark" marks, sprinkle with icing sugar "snow" and add some Christmas decorations or edible glitter.

Love the idea of mini desserts - any other ideas/ recipes for minis?

I get a bit carried away with desserts at Christmas and make far too many (probably in the desire that there is enough for everyone for boxing day breakfast too!). For mini desserts I would make meringues and use the yolks for crème brulee (if you can get small enough ramakins for it. A very very easy thing to do that always seems far more complex/posh than it actually is, is panacotta (sp?), which could be set in those little plastic sample cups which would be suitable for small individual serves.

OMG Sarah that's exactly what we do, brunch, BBQ mid afternoon and desserts for dinner. I now cannot get away without making the following:
pavlova, Xmas pudding, chocolate trifle, ambrosia and fruit salad.

Not sure what puddings we'll be having this year but the mince pies are already in the freezer, there will definitely be yule log and probably tiramisu - other two options will depend what others want to make. That's another bonus - we all make our own favourite.

The yule log takes me back to my childhood as Mum made one every year. Usually baking the chocolate roll herself but using a shop bought in later years. I always liked helping with the decoration, (got to lick the spoon afterwards) and she always had a little Robin and holly on the top.

I was watching Paul Hollywood decorate a Christmas log at the weekend and he piped on the icing to make it look like bark - even Mr 17 said "it's easier to just spread it all on and use a fork" - saves washing up too!

This year I am adding traffic light jellies to the mix and tiramisu or trifle instead of pavlova for the dessert meal - pavlova will be Christmas Day dessert
