Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

All valid points - none of that detail is actually relevant unless "grandfather" happened to be a renowned collector and you're establishing a pedigree. Otherwise it's just padding - or applying a dose of male cow poo to disguise the truth.

why is it that several traders advertise lots as "deceased estate" or "ex estate"-
A--------do they want us to feel sorry for them, and offer more money?
B --------do they believe buyers will be "dying" to bid on there items?
C --------are they greedy grandchildren trying to get best fast money for there inheritance
D-------or are they "dealers" working on commision trying to get best value for there client families
E- or perhaps just ordinary folk ,who do not know anything about the items they are selling, but think that if they describe it as being from a deceased estate,it will increase the bidding

F- none of the above

G ----all of the above

For sellers who don't normally deal with coins, to me it just means that they don't know much about the item(s). They're saying "It is what it is", and I don't see a problem with that. Much better than people who know better trying to sell a polished turd as something more than what it is.

I agree that these terms are unnecessary padding for people who sell coins regularly, and that "these were my grandfather's" points back in the direction of someone trying to add provenance or credibility where it may otherwise be lacking, or worse.

The best bargain offer I've had all week (Tui). Maybe it's another one of these charity cases.

Lot of 25 large over-cleaned Roman coins 1-250 AD
Start price: $34.99 No reserve Closes: Mon 10 Nov, 11:50 am Listing #: 802529984
Welcome to cc coins
Up for auction is a lot of 25 low quality over-cleaned ancient roman coins from between 1-250 AD.
These coins all measure over 25mm in diameter
Where did these coins come from?
Before the time of banks the Romans buried their money to protect it. Until recently with modern day metal detectors it was to costly to look for this treasure. So these coins have been buried for 2000 years. They are simply amazing to think that you could afford this treasure for such a great price.
Another lot of bovine faeces that's swamping the coin listings.
Competition: What does cc stand for?

True, there is an element of misleading the unwary into thinking there's more value than there might be.

Friday night humour,
The lawyer says: "I have good news and bad news."
The CEO replies: "I’ve had an awful day, let's hear the good news first."
The lawyer says: "Your wife invested $20,000 in five pictures that are worth a minimum of $2 million."
The CEO replies enthusiastically: "Well done, that is very good news indeed! You've made my day; now what is the bad news?"

The lawyer answers: "They are pictures of you in bed with your secretary."

Hey Guys just wondering if anyone here would have information on a Australian Sydney 2000 Olympic coin I have as i can not seem to find one online that says "Distributor Meeting Lausanne Switzerland"

http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/342755325.jpg

Photo on the right is dark due to the reflection of the camera but is actually a bright silver finish

Cheers

A medal for participants at the distributor meeting?

Yea it seems a bit odd that I can not find a picture of it online It does come in a case with the logos of both the Perth Mint and the Royal Australian Mint but I also could not find a mention to this particular item on those sites.

I've asked a bit further afield on this one - a contact in Oz has now forwarded it to someone at a sports museum who gave a presentation at a numismatic conference a few years ago, to see if she's familiar with it.

Ah the pain of obtaining from Australia: buyer's feedback notes " had to pay 115 gst and tax" Not a cheap sovereign and a salutary lesson to us all.

Looks like feedback has been deleted. GST should have been only about $65 though - there must have been a $50 ransom (sorry, admin/release fee) on top.

First is in MacMaster: MM1972/8. "Episcopus Aucklandensis" is Latin for Bishop of Auckland. The reverse was designed by John Cresswell, btw - some may still have his "orange book" on collecting coins produced in the 1970s. I'll check the second in a mo.

Second looks to be the British War Medal 1914-20. Silver much more common than bronze (6.5 million vs. 110,000 issued), assuming full size (36 mm). Guessing yours is silver but just a bit tarnished? Not sure from the pic. Reference is no. 168 in Medal Yearbook 2010.
