4801

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

I don't have the energy for the pointless debate with him, and it's hard to tell from the fuzzy pixs if that 36-S Walking Lib is anywhere near MS, but from the worn flowers and apparent wear on the skirt lines, I am struggling to see it rate better than AU-55. If it IS MS-65, the greasy fingerprints being put on it will drop it at least to 64 within a few years.

But hey, make the claims, provide poor photos and someone might take the bait.

Yeah, thanks for that Peter. I had noticed where that came from as well. My (unanswered question) was an honesty test for him. I have no objections to him outbidding me, and no objections to on-selling. Heck, he can even give the coins a clean if that's what he likes. Lying about it? Well, murder will out.

On the upside, maybe he gives it another good clean to wash off his fingerprints before he ships it. I've bought a couple things from him before, but that will be the end of that.

BTW, here's the unanswered question he answered in the Seller's Comments:
"Hi, has this been cleaned? Cheers, Tim"

echoriath - 2014-10-27 23:31:00
4810

where did the coin come from?

I've no objection to on-selling, most of us do it in one way or the other, although if you buy an item with the express purpose to sell it on, then you really should be in trade, I'd have thought.

if it's the same coin, then it was bought only a week ago! I can see good feather detail on the Eagle's chest, as long as it is not cleaned, it could be an AU-58, but probably not MS, and certainly not MS-65. That is well over selling it!! The $100 dollars paid for that auction seems to be about right to me, if you wanted those coins. But if your intent is to re-sell, I think it might be too much. It seems like a lot of effort to make a few bucks! I can't see anyone buying it for the price on trademe, but you never know. (I see our Dave's trade in forged stamps failed to proceed, tee-hee!!)

Snake oil : an expression that has come to refer to products with questionable or unverifiable quality or benefit (quote). Now we all know what the semantic enhancement of the condition of this trader's numismatic items is due to ....

We should all offer congratulations on the sale of the NZ 1936 florin ~ it was a beauty and deserved its price. Well done Martin. (Alas too rich for me)

Jumping Jehosaphat!! Man, if ever some auctions demonstrated the importance of condition, compare Martin's wee beauty with the other 36 Florins about, both sold and unsold! Well done!

There are a lot of 1936 florins about that have been corruptly graded AU by pcgs and ngc. Like this one

Corrupt is right - cripes, I've sold better than that for under $100. On that scale, my one is about MS-126.

translateltd - 2014-10-29 08:21:00
4821

pcgs reckon each coin is anonymised before grading, but that has to be a crock! There is no way two world class graders would agree that that coin is AU, which they have to, according to pcgs, before the grade is finalised. It's a rort! I suspect certain customers get preferential treatment owing to the amount of business they give pcgs!

AU50 is VF in New Zealand grade

px,
here is a link showing different grading scales used around the world. it is from NGC, I think they use the same grading system as PCGS

duanmu - 2014-10-29 21:01:00

I found 3rd party grading very useful. For a newbie like me, it is very hard to tell if a coin is aUNC or UNC, or if the coin is cleaned.
I hope one day New Zealand can have our own grading company, specialize in NZ coins.

duanmu - 2014-10-29 21:26:00
4826

Thanks, Duanmu - that chart is helpful. I don't think they use "AG" in Britain - probably Poor or Mediocre - but other than that it looks like a handy guide.

That poor Kiwi is nearly bald!! I'd say it is VF, in USA grading, at best!

Sell as bulk? Sell as one off for the next 20 weeks? Sell in smaller groups?

The 1966 rarely go for better than scrap value unless UNC which may get a small premium to that.

Wow - good find on the "broken neck" tiki. Will be interesting to see how many coins that turns up on. The line on the king's head looks like a die crack.

translateltd - 2014-10-31 19:32:00

Looks like progressive die degradation with the "broken neck" (and "broken face", as in extreme cases the eye circles don't touch the mouth circles at all) - I've found high-grade examples of both types, with other semi-broken features (e.g. very narrow gap, circles almost touching). Running about 2:1 in favour of the no-gap type so far. More to check ...

Did a quick skim of 88 1961 halfpennies, most in quite high grades, and found 60 "touching" or "almost touching" and 28 "broken neck". types. The touching/almost touching ones take a bit of squinting to tell apart but they look to have a 36/24 breakdown.
