Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

That was my thought too. That they were going to send it to be copied.... After this transaction they are going on my blacklist I feel.

Hi Deb, it just looks like marks on the surface of the coin (minor knocks/bag marks) to me - if you run your thumbnail very gently over them, you will feel if they are raised or not. If they're raised you have die damage - a bit like the 2-dots 1955 3d - but if they're indented it's probably just post-production damage to the coin.

I had the chance today to check a VF-ish original against one of the Chinese knock-offs and all the diagnostics on the above site stack up. If anything the fake is even more underweight (10.75g by my scales, compared to 11.30 for the real one). I had to squint a bit for some of the detail differences but yes, the copy is a bit more "soapy", for want of a better word, and has tinges of odd colour showing through.

TRANSNISTRIA 2014 unusual hard plastic coins Listing #: 79761153 .
"The Rise of the Replicator" is soon showing at a coin club near you. Just buy a high quality 3D printer and you can churn out your own money.
More seriously ~ how will Transnistria prevent fakes if they use plastic?

There's a 9 missing at the end of that item number: 797611539. Wonder if these things actually circulate, or if they're more trinkets for the gullible.

I would dispute this as since the discussion on micronations on this thread the reserve for a Riviera set has gone up from $40 to $70.
Sharp as a tack as always.

The quoted weight looks too high - should be in the range of 2.1g as far as I can see. There is a website that says 2.8075g, so the seller may have just looked it up there.

The guide price in Tony's book is much higher still. Not sure I see a problem if you spot something going cheap, buy it and offer it at a price that's still below catalogue :-)

I can't claim Venetian grossi as an area of specialisation but the legends, such as they are, don't look quite right to me. Well out of my field but maybe a contemporary issue from somewhere else in the neighbourhood based on the Venetian design?

in the previous listing of the 1/4 Guinea at twice the reserve, there is a question........
"Is that the weight of the actual coin you have there or is it the weight from a google search? Thanks:) fraggle44 (339 339 positive feedback) 1:49 pm, Tue 21 Oct
Actual weight -I weighed it myself 2:57 pm, Tue 21 Oct"
So a heavy fake or his scales are out.

The "Venice Grosso" threw me for a while, After eliminating Bulgaria and Serbia and noting the Greek lettering now suspect it's a Silver Asper from the medieval Empire of Trebizond in north east Anatolia.

Can anyone get an weight accurate to 4 decimal places at home that just happens to match an incorrect figure on a website?

Plausible - I was wondering Byzantine-ish based on the lettering.

Krause gives a gross weight of 2.0875g, which is more realistic (guineas should be 5% heavier than sovereigns so roughly 8.4g gross). The website has clearly transposed the first two digits, and by sheer coincidence, so did our seller.

I retract my earlier comments - just read this in the October 2014 issue of the ANA's "Numismatist": "The coins, which were produced in Russia, are "characterized by a higher degree of strength and durability, which will limit (or even exclude) the potential for counterfeiting." Their unique features include various geometric patterns; special tactile properties; and elements with selective infrared absorption."
So they're essentially coins that use polymer banknote technology.

It's a shame there were too many bidders. I was trying to get a bid in around 500... It would have graded well with pcgs/ngc.
