Hi everyone ... Finally made it back into the sewing room. I have a friend who lost her husband to motor neurone disease last year who wants quilts and other things made out of his clothing. So I have made three cushions using shirts and started on a lap quilt using trousers and shirts. I also created a shoulder bag using the pocket off some cargo pants and am very happy with the result.

Thanks dilli ....awesome idea. Will have to try that.
Yesterday I made a fidget quilt for the dementia unit where my daughter works. It was my first attempt so am waiting for some feedback before I make any more.

Hi Barbrose- how big did you make the fidget quilt? I think they would be a great thing for a small craft group to make that I belong to. Are you allowed things like trinkets, buttons etc. That would be sewn on securely.Cheers.

Hi floss, I made the quilt approx 24 x 16 inches.
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/438836258.jpg
This was my first attempt and I have since made two more which I think are improvements. Everything is sewn on securely but I also used Velcro on the picket flap. I wouldn't use ordinary ribbon as it frays too easily and wouldn't be strong enough for constant use. Have to remember these might be washed frequently too so need to be mindful of what will cope with that. I used a large button on a piece of elastic in my second one and also filled a small square of fabric with cellophane to make a crinkly noise. I also made large button holes and big buttons (but slightly smaller than the holes). I bought colourful shoe laces for threading and am using old pill bottles with cord through lid and bottom of container so they can unscrew the lids without losing them. Just have to work out how to attach so they can be removed easily for washing. The one I am working on a present is just one piece of fabric, spray basted on to polar fleece and then everything sewn directly on top using appliqué or zig zag stitching. Looks really good. The zippers need large pullers but they don't have to open into a pocket. One of mine does but the others just open slightly and I have sewn a cute piece of fabric underneath for a bit of interest. I am just using stuff from my craft collections. It is so satisfying making something that others get so much pleasure from. They would also be good for small children.

Bumping us back up again .... Gosh its been hot today. My skin feels like it is burning but I have stayed inside. Have just finished my third lap quilt in a week. A friend lost her husband last year and she wanted some memory quilts, etc made from his clothes. I have made two raggy quilts and one round the world quilt, three cushions and two shoulder bags (out of cargo pants pockets and ties). I want to make one more bag, and two more cushions and maybe another quilt if I can conjour up the energy. What has everyone else been doing?

Good morning everyone . We have a beautiful day here in Central Otago. I think it is going to be a hot one. Have just taken our wee mini schnauzer for a walk, before it gets too hot. I hope to finish a baby's matinee jacket today while watching the cricket - if it is still on. Hope everyone has a great day. Cheers.

Hello .... First post for February ????
It's been so hot the last week or so .... Ready for a bit of rain and cooler temperatures. I haven't even been able to settle into any sewing but hope that changes soon. I think I got burnt out making quilts, cushions and little bags for a friend out of her deceased husband's clothes. Made 4 quilts, 8 cushions and three bags! All since Christmas!

barbrose - 2016-02-07 21:49:00

Hot here to Barb, it is the 98% humidity that does it for me. Looking for rain as well. Ive been sewing dolls sleeping bag was down to 4 so busy sewing up my new supply of them. Sew at night when it is cooler.
You have been busy with the sewing 4 quilts wow that is a task on its own.
Nice cold drinks in the fridge help yourself. Have a great week all. Oh Im not crying that the water running of me from the heat. heheheheee

They were only lap quilts Dilli and I "cheated" by making them raggy quilts which meant no binding and when they were joined, they were actually finished. Bit like quilt as you go.
The bags were easy too ... I used the pockets from cargo pants - just put a back on them and added a man's tie for the strap.
So, nothing was difficult - just time consuming and it was intense because I was working to a tight deadline.

and your great imagination, great ideas. sounds like a lot of fun making them. I like doing weird things too. Too hot to sew But I did go to Bsbs and bought some more fabric for the sleeping bags. One lot was sold out but did get 10 metres of the other and bought some other fabrics as well for the sleeping bags. SO sewing this weekend, and have to list some new auctions as well, so a busy weekend ahead. Its my weekend off so that's nice. Have a great weekend all. I am. Darn it is so hot here. We need rain

Hi everyone .... I have been out of action for a while. All is well - just really busy. Then I had a 10 day cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Returned at Easter and had family staying till a few days ago. Cruise was okay - far too hot for me so hardly got off the ship at port. I was hoping to find some cotton sarongs but came home empty handed. I found some lovely sarongs but they were not any good for quilting. Have just made a start on the Missouri Star Quilt wall flower quilt for a grand-daughter's 12 birthday in August.

Nice to have you back Barb, Pleased the cruise was OK, at least you were waited on for meals every day eh. Hope you meet some nice people as well. Nice to have the place to yourself again eh, specially after being away as well. The Mission Star Quilt sounds nice. Looking forward to the photo when you get started.
Took my daughter to the Hamilton East Market today, she didn't evenknow it was on. Ooops should have told her sooner eh. Well I think she bought enough fruit trees to start an orchard. And I got her a dutch coffee grinder that she really liked, and wed been looking for one for ages. It ticked all the boxes. So I think we both had our Mothers day early this year heheheheheeeee. (and we only went to get some worm manure - which we could not find this day) Having a nice cup of coffee now. Have a great day.

Something wrong with access to my photos .... Nothing showed up, just empty boxes but I managed to find one which when loaded looks fine. Very odd indeed. Anyway, the quilt will be made with blocks like this. The cream will be in every block .... Will show more when I lay them out.

It sounds like we are in much the same boat Dilli .... Had to take mum to the wound clinic today and at last I feel more confident she is getting the right care. And district nurse is taking over with home visits so that makes life a lot easier.
Tomorrow I am off to Raumati with a girlfriend and my four daughters and daughter-in-law for a weekend of relaxation and laughter. Mum's 90 year old sister is coming to stay - they will be great company for each other. I have made a huge pot of soup for them which should last the four days I am away - for lunches or dinner. Plus prepared other simple meals so they will be fine. Mum would eat soup for lunch and dinner if she had the choice but that would never satisfy me.
Hope your grandson is doing better

Hope you he a great 4 days. All the best. Your mum and her sister will love the soup. (I could live on soup too) Grandson came out of hospital last night, so all is good there. I am just catching up with my sewing.
