Good morning everyone. I have been on a sewing binge most of the week. Took my machine in for servicing on Thursday afternoon and thankfully it was ready for collection first thing yesterday.
I made this quilt just using some of my larger scraps and sewed it inside out on to a cotton sheet and then turned it. So no binding at all. It will be my summer bedding as I hate weight on me and usually just sleep under a sheet. I am very happy with it and am in the process of making another one.

dna looked at your auction with the Janome. You have asked some good questions and the machine sounds great. and they are selling only because they are leaving NZ> even it it did need a service It would still be a l ot cheaper and you get a warrantly with a service. so that would solve that problem. Sounds great to me.
Barb I am so busy selling fabric and sewing goods on trade me at the moment I don't really have time to sew and I should have recovered from my fall injuries by then too. (as it hurts so much to sit at the moment.). But I am looking forward to getting back to sewing.

dilligaf_dah - 2015-03-20 23:15:00
47264

Dna hope you have managed to make a decision about the machine. For me, I would buy new unless I knew the seller and their sewing habits/history. I haven't looked at the auction but will in a minute. I love the 1/4 in foot and I also really like the Janome machine. I have the computerised Horizon model which has the larger throat.

barbrose - 2015-03-22 10:36:00
47265

Oh, I should have looked at auction first lol. That machine is the one my 94 year old mum uses every day. It works well and she has had no issues with it at all. I don't think you could go wrong with it dna. Just get it serviced before you use it.

I thought the same barb the machine looked great. HOpe you all had a nice weekend. Just watched the cricket highlites. wow I really enjoyed it. (don't have Sky so can not watch it live).

Started the scrappy log cabins today .... Have made 4 15x15 blocks so far. I think that's all I need for a small quilt once I add borders and sashing.

Hi Dilli and everyone. Can't have us falling off the page so thanks for the bump Dilli. I have been playing with the twist and stitch tool and made two placemats. Just the hand sewing to finish and then I will post some photos. Managed to get into the garden for a bit today as well. I love not having to go to work any more

Hi ladies, hope everyone is well. I've just bought first lot of fabrics from e-quilter. I wonder how long they will take to arrive. Lots of cat fabrics which I have not seen here at all

47282

viv, that sound awesome. I had lots of cat fabric as well kids love the kittens. Sewed so many dolls clothes with them, Only have one lot of kittens cut out as dolls dresses left. Very nice to sew though, make ya smile when you look at the cats and kittens. Hope your fabrics arrive soon so you can get started.

Bumping us up again.
I finally finished sorting my sewing room ... Everything is nice and tidy now and I even have 4 empty drawers so can start stockpiling again lol. I went through every piece of fabric and decided whether it could be kept as a large piece or get cut into either 10inch, 5 inch squares or 2 1/2 inch strips. I will do this from now on whenever I finish a project. And then once they were cut, etc I either added the "leftovers" to the crumb basket or the pet pillow basket. Nothing was wasted .... Made three pet pillows for the local cat rescue group just using the unusable bits inside a polar fleece outer. Hope everyone is well

47284

Well done barb, I had just done that sorted everything. Now everything from the spare room has been stored in the sewing room while my sister is here. but it will go out again the day she leaves. Then Ill be all set up again for sewing. All good here. Jugs on for coffee, and brekkie help ya selves.

dilligaf_dah - 2015-04-11 07:50:00

Brrrr a real change in weather today, especially temperatures. I lit the fire this morning and now the house is lovely and warm. A bit cold in the sewing room so I spent most of the day sitting in front of the fire just blobbing and playing games on iPad. However, mum and I managed to peel, cut and core a huge bucket full of Monty Surprise apples and get them stewed and into the freezer so not a completely wasted day. What is everyone up to?

barbrose - 2015-04-13 18:38:00
47286

Ill have some of the apples. Having fun with my sister she is going through all the magazines I saved for her. Have a cool time.

I'm new to this thread. I'm making my very first quilt (I asked a lot of questions in a separate post under craft)... I've touched a sewing machine maybe three times in the last 20 years and that was small craft items with a friend sitting with me helping. So I'm very proud of this!! It's for my new niece or nephew, due May 1. I learned how to do it watching tutorials - God bless youtube!!! It is FAR from perfect and not yet finished but just wanted to share it with people who are enthusiastic as I can't tell my sister because it's a surprise :) https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/376166305.jpg

Nunesy, that is just lovely, there is no stopping you now. Lucky baby getting a quilt. Do show us again when you have topstitched the quilt. Feel free to ask questions here, might take a while to get an answer, but I'll try to check here more often. Enjoy your stitching, it's fun.

skippie1 - 2015-04-14 16:27:00
47289

Awesome work nunesy ... And you have even mitred the corners. This will just be the first of many ????

barbrose - 2015-04-14 22:27:00
47290

It's stitched now! Has lots of minor puckers - how the heck do you not have that happen when the batting makes each square a little bit puffy? I unpicked and redid several bits but there was always extra fabric being pressed under the foot and nowhere for it to go due to the other seams being sewn already. So it kept doing the same thing so I left it. You don't notice mostly... mostly! And thanks barbrose, I am VERY proud of my mitred corners - I watched a youtube tutorial about fifteen times before attempting it :) Only had to redo one of the four :) Will post a photo in the next day or so... tomorrow is binding time! Thanks skippie for the offer of help. I'm using a borrowed sewing machine so have to give it back next week... but in a wee while I think I'll be back here asking questions because I am really keen to buy my own now :)

nunesy - 2015-04-14 22:37:00
47291

The only way to stop the puckers is when you pin your 3 layers together slightly stretch the backing as you pin it down, or use masking tape to stick it down. Then place your batting on top, then the quilt top. Use lots of pins to stop things from shifting. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine and start stitching from the Centre of the quilt. Hope this info helps.

skippie1 - 2015-04-14 23:24:00
47292

Thanks skippie1, I did all those things!!! That thing was pinned within an inch of its life!! :) Possibly didn't stretch the backing enough as one tutorial said don't do it too much or that will cause problems too... but I think I'm going to put it down to being my first sewing experience in years. I have found the walking foot tricky too so I hate to think what would've happened if I hadn't used one (although I know lots of people find it simple without one). I do think if I ever make a second one it will be a lot better as I have learned heaps as I've gone along. I would quite like to make a strip quilt as I like the look of them (and they're simple) but will have to wait til I buy a machine first. Thanks again for the advice, I take it all!

Hi everyone .... I've been away for the past five days in Raumati with my four daughters, daughter in law and best friend for a girls weekend away. We have had so much fun. Laughed and laughed. And even managed a quick stop at Spotlight in PN today on the way home. Hopefully will get into the sewing room tomorrow as there as some new projects I want to try.

barbrose - 2015-04-19 20:08:00
47295

So here's my first ever quilt... also posted in the walking foot thread started by me. Far from perfect but I'm pretty proud!!! Two weeks or less before I can gift it :) Any advice on how to wash it? I'm scared of wrecking it at this stage! https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/377361037.jpg
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/377361111.jpg

nunesy - 2015-04-19 20:40:00
47296

Nunesy, that is gorgeous, well done for a first quilt. Just womdering why you would want to wash it. Give washing instruction to the person who receives your lovely gift. A quilt only needs a very quick, cool wash and dry flat. I only give my quilts a 15 min wash cycle with a very fast spin. I never iron my quilts as I like to crinkly look.

skippie1 - 2015-04-19 23:21:00
47297

Well done nunesy - I love it! Who ever said we had to get it perfect on our first go? Baby steps . . . . just remember we are always learning.
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/368800719.jpg
This is my latest - a gift for a friend. She loves it (and so do I, I hasten to add) but all I see is the lines that are not straight. I have to keep reminding myself to listen to my own advice. Every quilt I do is different and always a learning experience. And . . . . . . I do know that they are always well received. Your recipient is going to love it.

Great quilt nunesy. Wonderful first effort.
I find fault with every quilt I make but no one else ever sees what I see. One of my quilt recipients told me at the weekend that something has frayed and is coming undone (I imagine it has been washed far too often) so I will probably add an appliqué flower or something to cover it, which will change the whole quilt into something different.
Judy your quilt looks awesome too.
