Sorry for hijacking your thread -I am filling a sewing basket for a trendy young a Mum -would love some ideas for some things a bit different -have bought sound really good scissors -pins and pin cushion -her husband gave her a really nice machine for her birthday so thought notions would be a good idea but run out of ideas

gerry64 - 2014-12-11 16:28:00

A few extra bobbins for the machine, an unpicker, Machine oil, make sure it is sewing machine oil. and a few trimmings ie, bias binding, tape, ribbon, lace, buttons, etc. good luck sounds like a lot of fun putting it together.

My school day sewing lessons were so long ago -I shall go with your shopping list dilligaf

Good morning - however it would be an even better morning if the sun was shining. But at least the rain has stopped for now. Am sick of this weather.
All gifts except one are now finished and wrapped. Phew! Now mum has decided to re-cover my wooden glory box (which I use for storing bedding) for my Christmas present. She's amazing for a 94 year old! I hovered around but she removed most of the tacks and old covering all by herself yesterday afternoon. I forgot to take a before photo but will record process from now on.
What is everyone up to? Jugs on and there are mince tarts for those who like them.

Gerry put some good quality sewing thread in the basket too .... And maybe a tape measure. What a lovely gift idea.

barbrose - 2014-12-12 07:49:00
47109

Gerry, I suggest some lovely white or cream fabric to go with the trimmings Dilli suggested as she will probably want to make something straight away and I second "good quality thread" nothing stuffs up the bobbin are of a machine like horrid cheap thread.

franny8 - 2014-12-13 22:34:00
47110

I keep checking in for suggestions -thank you -if I get a mixture of the basic colours of threads and thought some metallic threads -found a lovely pin cushion at a craft shop -lovely bright mushroom

47109 posts and your all wrong.
It rubbish, junk, waste of space.
My missus has enough fabric to clothe all those poor kids in Africa, what does she do with it? Nothing.
Clutters up my loft, spare room, cupboards.
I could easily use this space to house my useful collection of car parts as my garage is full.

Nor do I any more.
Can do you a good deal on 4x50 metres of black or red swimsuit fabric though.
Thinking of starting a 1$ reserve auction, see if I can sell it faster than she collects it.
Knowing my luck she'd be the winning bidder, geez.

cabrio1 - 2014-12-17 20:31:00
47114

Cabrio there is no cure for fabric collection ....the best thing you could do is humour her and build another room for her ... She will love you it!

barbrose - 2014-12-17 22:37:00
47115

Yes copy that, I do love her even though she's often invisible behind mounds of "useful" fabric.
We have (had) a spare room that is used for creations so she's cool with that.
Dare not try to help with a tidy up, oh no. And God forbid suggesting a downsize. Having said she leaves me alone with my lovely greasy car parts.
You may end up seeing us on tv one day, desperately short of space but fabric/parts rich.

47116

Cabrio1 - I love it. My husband stands at the door of my craft room and just shakes his head. Sewing machine and fabric piled up. Could be addicted to something worse. Merry Xmas.

Absoflippinlutely. Just glad to hear I'm not the only one. Wouldn't change her for the world.
We have curtains, covers, curtains and more curtains. All the envy of my non fabric loving friends so good on her. They are double lined, triple hemmed and cost nought.
We even have clothes for our dog to keep her warm! Crickey she's a dog, she's designed to be warm. Bless them both.
Have to say the dog looks a bit uncomfortable in her chemise, haven't said a word...

47118

Oh cabrio just start building a double garage and it will suit both of you hehehehheeeeee though I bet it wont take long to fill it with fabric. I have fabric in every room in the house at the moment. cant wait for xmas to be over so I can fill those spaces with fabric again too. At least its not as bad as my sister she has baking utentensils and trays and different cake tines etc by the mile high piles. And they make such a racket when they fall over esp if its the whole pile and fabric doesn't do that eh..........

dilligaf_dah - 2014-12-18 21:33:00
47119

Oh been there done that. Garages from here to the boundary. Full of lovely cars and motorbikes, parts tools, awesome..useful stuff.
I'm actually way worse than her between you and me.
BUT MY STUFF IS USEFULL. I have spares that I dont think I'll need for years, when I do need them all I have to do is find them.
Good news is I never run short of rags, ssshh don't tell.

and Im sure your wife doesn't run out of oil, meths for cleaning needles and sandpaper for sharpening the needles either. and the small screw drivers needed on the machines etc Ooops prob should not have told ya that eh. heheheee

Good morning ....wakes wakey rise and shine
I stopped work two weeks ago and ever since then, I have been waking at 6am or sometimes even earlier. Normally I wouldn't wake up till after 8 and then have to rush to get to work on time. Not sure whether I will have a job at the same place next year but in the meantime, I am on full pay for three months while they make up their minds. Hope everyone is enjoying the warmer temperatures and sunshine. We have had summer in Whanganui for the last week. Might do some sewing today. Jugs on for Cuppa.

Whew it's hot! Have stripped down to a sarong and knickers and feel much more comfortable. It's not the most attractive look but I don't care. Took three grandie's out for a long walk to the lake this morning. We fed the ducks and then had an Icecream and drink before walking home. It was a lovely 3 hours and meant their parents could finish their Christmas shopping. No sewing for the past few days .... Might be after Christmas before I get back there. Hope everyone is well. Mulled wine and mince pies for those who wish ....
