Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Not Unc but looks like it could be the harder to find Wide date with out die crack. (according to a Mintmark article by J Brook)

some of the Mowbray grading looks decidedly dodgy, either that or they have swapped some of the pictures around by mistake. There are some coins that look under graded, and others over graded!

You may have to bid on a large number of lots so it will average out :-)

I'm boggling a little at these discoveries - I thought there would only have been a couple of spacing options, but clearly not. Time for a rethink about how the edge irons are/were put together.

Hey guys I have a quick question in regards to posting coins overseas.... How do you guys do it and how much does it cost... Lets say to the USA? Do you use normal post at buyers risk or do you send via one of the white bags at NZPost?

Small stuff that can be concealed in stiff card goes by regular airmail; bigger items need to go by International Economy Courier or some such to comply with the RNSNZ/Dealers' Association numismatic exemption if you qualify under either category. Without the exemption you can't legally post any numismatic items that require a customs declaration (unless you can bluff your way through by describing the contents as "numismatic items" and hoping no-one asks awkward questions!).

has anyone used youshop to ship coins from Canada to the Portland warehouse? I have two Canadian dollar coins, one shipped on the 4th, the other the 5th, from different locations in Canada (Brit. Columbia and Alberta, which both appear to be fairly close to Oregon on a map), but neither is yet to be recorded as arriving at the warehouse. They were sent basic letter-post, so there is no tracking. Is there a good chance they'll arrive soon?

Looks like a private issue so no idea. The small characters in the field next to MANKIND MUST may be an indication of weight or fineness, or could just be designer's initials ...

I am giving thought to taking NZ post to the disputes tribunal regarding my stolen youshop items. Is it a goer, or a stupid idea? Any comments and/or advice on the matter appreciated. Thanks!

Probably a waste of time, unfortunately, since coins are "illegal" to post in the first place - even though NZ Post itself does it.

translateltd - 2014-09-25 20:14:00
4628

be that as it may, if sending coins is "illegal", then NZ Post is complicit in the illegality, because I've been telling them or about my "illegal" activities, and at no point have they suggested I should desist.

Does anyone have experience with the disputes tribunal? Is it a common sense sort of setting, where you can't get away with simply denying the bloomin' obvious?

dtpapa - 2014-09-26 09:41:00

Been there twice with judgments in my favour both times. I don't think I'd bother a third time unless I was claiming over $1000. I realise the goal is to compromise, but you have to aim higher, knowing you won't get more than about half of what you claim if you actually win. And of course, a judgment can be appealed.

Personally, I found it a Pyrrhic victory at best, and I suspect you'd have more luck going against a spring rip tide than taking on NZ Post in the DT.

Just my thoughts.

echoriath - 2014-09-26 10:28:00
4630

No matter how strong your case is?

Do NZ Post have very good lawyers? (I guess I'll be representing myself)

dtpapa - 2014-09-26 11:03:00
4631

You technically don't take lawyers in, but of course they'll have someone pretty well schooled up on the rules, lawyer or no. But ultimately the referee is free to ignore the letter of the law and rule on "common sense" based on the facts presented. Have everything well documented, of course, and be sure to provide copies in advance to the court and to the other side.

I had the same referee both times. I don't know if it's just him or how they operate more generally, but they can feel quite adversarial towards both parties when Initially presenting the facts. If you get that far, keep your cool, stick to the facts and don't let them fluster you.

oldecurb clarified what I did not: what is the value of your time? Especially if they appeal the decision. And with a big operator like NZ Post, they may also swamp the process with documents, relevant or not. One of my times in the DT (this year, in fact) was over a trade on here, the other was with Flight Centre several years ago.

The time I wasted taking off work, prepping documents and being generally annoyed was not worth it.

If your case would centre around NZ Post's hypocrisy about us not being meant to ship coins when they do themselves, it might be worth it just to force them to have a sensible policy. That WOULD be a genuinely great public service. Realistically, I suspect the referee would direct them to create said policy and implement it over a certain time frame. Enforcing judgments made in the DT can be another Pandora's Box.

If you decide to go ahead with the case (whatever it is), here's hoping the bricks are reasonably soft.

My case will actually be concerned with security at the Portland warehouse. Whether you should be allowed to ship coins might be a side issue, but not the main one. I'd imagine there'd be pre-case disclosure, and NZ Post would have to give details of the operations of YouShop, the security systems employed, and give proof as to why it would be impossible for any item to be pinched, once it has been delivered safely to the warehouse.

Couple of rim dings too, by the AL of ZEALAND and the last E of WAREHOUSE. Even by US grading standards that's ambitious. Just more "grade inflation".

I've just given one of my Milner and Thompson's a good ultra-sounding with hot water and grapefruit dish wash liquid, and it has now acquired a lovely blue hue!!

I wonder by what factor its value have increased following my intervention?

That NGC graded Milner & Thompson went for 300USD! I reckon the exact same coin, ungraded, would probably be worth 50-100USD.
