no, popeye it was a hospice shop. I always find them expensive for craft stuff and furniture. They had a lounge suite in there, was $800 and it had a sold sticker on it. I think they must be in cahoots with the dentist. The receptionist there didn't bat an eyelid when she said $480.

Carolev tell them charity begins at home, but if they don't want to take advantage of your good nature, then there are plenty of orphans who would appreciate your knitting.

Cool here, heat pump is on, so nice and warm in the family/dining/kitchen area. Even the cat didn't stay outside long, she has realised it's better indoors when it's cold outside. I hope it's going to be a nice day, it is overcast at the moment, but there's no wind, so if it clears it should be nice and warm, like yesterday.

Blanket is on hold till I do an order I got yesterday, it won't take me long, but I have to order some wool for it. I tried last night and it nearly drove me bonkers. Internet kept dropping out, and I'm ordering from both skeinz and utiku, and utiku wouldn't accept my credit card. I tried four times and gave up so I'll have to try again today. After 3 attempts I placed the order with skeinz (that was internet problems). I was getting very brassed off. Internet seems fine this morning.

I noticed our op shop wasn't cheap either, it seems to be a trend at the moment.

Kuaka, we had internet problems the other day, could load websites but not 'open' them. Could get onto Trademe, but not open any threads. And sites we just couldn't access. It seems to happen in school holidays so I wonder if our lines just can't cope.

Second load of washing on, dishes done, bed stripped and remade, bathroom and loo to clean, dusting, vacumming and wash floors to do and I am done. Won't take long to wiz round.

I have trouble in the mornings and was putting it down to the holidays.
Was talking to a friend about it and she said hers was the same. she suggested turning the comp on and leaving it for at least 15 minutes. Let it warm up.
Its worked for me, I couldn't open websites, could sometimes type a message in here and then it would freeze.

So Im thinking perhaps it gets cold or has condensation and likes to be warm before doing anything. cos its worked ever since.

Maybe I wont complain about our oppy prices, I got 6-7 25grm balls of wool crepe for $6. Its a beautiful rusty gingernut colour. Called rosewood but I call it gingernut.
Went to the library and printed of a lot of patterns. The oens I saved to word wouldn't open so Ill just find where I got them and go down again and print off the website. free to be on the comp but 20 cents per page, and that's double sided too.
So I came home and vacuumed, folded washing and then tidied my patter folders.
B*gger re the credit card Kuaka. I couldn't get the prezzie card to register and had to ring up. Then I couldn't get another parcel card number to register and had to call that in too.
Time for a play here and then ill get to my needles

I have packed this lot up today for posting tomorrow.
Most of my wool is recycled--I buy woollies from second hand shops--and unpick them--but do keep an eye out at Spotlight for bargains.
I work 2 mornings a week at the Red Cross shop--so am able to keep an eye out for wool and woollies--second hand shops here have become expensive too.
I just love colour--and love the colours of wool that I come across--and last week at work I came across a box of scarves--found 6 knitted ones in gorgeous colours--which I bought to unpick--I have rather a large pile of woollies sitting waiting to be unpicked--and at the moment I am sitting surrounded by 2 large bags of wool--I have knitted 4 beanies today--best I clean up before I head to bed.

I received a lovely hand made birthday card from an old school friend yesterday who I haven't heard from for over 20 years - was lovely to hear from her again and now I have her address, we can stay in touch.

My dad has organised a birthday cake for me lol... OK, I 'mentioned' at his birthday dinner I haven't had a birthday cake since I was a kid so he asked a friend of his to bake me one lol. So tomorrow, we are having carrot cake for afternoon tea lol. My first birthday cake in years and years!

If I can get my chores done quickly this morning, I'll stitch or crochet or maybe knit some squares. Nice to have choices!

I made one but my best friend whose birthday is April26th had one made and gave it to me at her 21st party. Then we were all going out to Cobb and Co (woohoo flash back then lol) and another friend made a cake and had it there for a surprise. That was 28 years ago lol
Its my eldest nephews birthday today. He is now 38. I remember him as being my best birthday present ever lol.

I started a mitten last night with the merino I got,, soo lovely to knit. its a lovely blue/lilac colour. For me, Ive made it slightly narrower than the other two pair I have done.
Please get cold enough so I can wear them lol

Ohh and Carole that's naughty re your lunchtime,. Take some snacks otherwise your diabetes will be all over the place.

yep, it's a big one for me tomorrow - 50 :) Don't feel it at all :). I knew your birthday was a day around about mine lol. May is a very good month :P

Ironing is done (I knowwww!!!!!!!) it is one job I just hate with a vengeance and rate it up there with cleaning the oven but I couldn't leave it any longer. Washing out, dishes done, kettles boiled, now to have some knitting time :)

happy birthday kiwimade - I recall celebrating my 50th on a visit back to the UK to see the family, so it was quite special. Last time I had a birthday cake that I didn't bake was my 60th - hubby bought me one and a friend baked and decorated one. And for my 65th - did I get anything special - nooooooooooo. Better make up for it when 70 ticks round.

carol113 - I have several versions of that pattern, some have the rows of holes, some don't. It's a very old pattern as my mum had a bedspread made with that pattern when I was a kid, so must be at least 60 years old. I can dig mine out if you like and tell you what they are, or you could google "leaf motif blanket" (maybe) that should bring up some links.

We are only a year apart then Kiwimade.. I havent struggled with a birthday, other than turning 41 and out living my father. sister and brother. But this one feels weird, cos once the year is gone Ill never be 40 anything again. It just feels weird, lol... I hope it does fly by tho lol.
MrP just asked when my birthday was, cos he never knows what the date of any day is lol. I said Monday and he said I don't have anything for you, Told him that was ok my wool is my birthday present.
Next year I might send him out with my friend to buy me something, cos I never get surprises other than presents from that friend.

Love the leaf motif blanket I have a different pattern, but its photocopied soo dark its hard to see. That blanket is very pretty tho Carole.

Carol113, I have a pattern for a similar blanket, it's a Sirdar pattern, number 1903 and has an entrelac blanket as well. It I called a "leaf square blanket' on this pattern.

Good evening--I've had a busy day--been to visit elderly friends this morning--I used to care for them when I was working for a Care Agency--when I finished work I carried on visiting every Saturday morning--I posted the beanies off to Adelaide--came home and I've been knitting this afternoon--done 2 little beanies and one of a pair of slippers for myself.
I thought about going to Spotlight this afternoon to look at their sale--drove passed--and had to talk very severely to the car about going in there on it's own accord--so we carried on passed--get home then I wonder what I might have missed out on--of course tomorrow is another day.

yes it is carole, but I also think of it as a privilege. We were with mum when she passed away and my sister and I nursed her through those awful months. We both considered it an honour to be there with her. Your friend will no doubt appreciate you being there, a chance to reminisce, laugh and cry. You are lucky to have this time with her.

Not much to say...I jut feel really blessed at having a loving supportive family.

I have had a few rough days healthwise but am picking up. I haven't been able to settle down to knit. My GP wanted me to go to hospital and have an NG tube put in and stay for 3 days observation, but I didn't/haven't as yet and seem to be picking up again. Tomorrow will be the 3rd day.
It is hard sorting blood sugars when you are living on clear fluids.
Jelly is a help.

Well I'm 50 today. It's kinda snuck up on me. Dad and my sister are bringing out my birthday cake lol today but we're having a party in two weeks time. This morning I'll wiz round with the vacuum (damed flies!) and nip into the supermarket for some more milk. Have enough for us, but not extras :P. I sometimes get a bit teary on my birthday as its the day I think of my birth mother and wonder if she remembers the date. So today I'm going to keep busy and try not to do that. I have a wonderful family and that's what matters.

Will try and sneak in some stitching or crochet or knitting lol... hey it's my birthday and I can do as I please!

Morning everyone and HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIWIMADE... Hope you have an awesome day... I imagine it would be emotional, wondering if you are remembered by your birth mother. Do you feel scared , that's not the word but any odd feelings about turning the Big 50? Im more worried about mine tomorrow than next year being 50, at this stage. I know when my brother turned 50 a couple of years ago I teased him no end lol Our voodoo always being 41, and we are well past that.

GMS not good you haven't been well. Lol at the jelly, home made jelly is much nicer than hospital jelly too.

I agree it is a privilege and honor to spend the last hours with someone close. I sat with my stepfather the last day he had. They sent him to a closer to home hospital. Ill never understand how my mother could leave him to go home for time out. I rubbed his back for nearly 2 hours after he died. I know it didn't help him but it helped me. And I organised his funeral. Which I was very proud of.

Lovely day for the ducks here today. very high cloud, brilliantly sunny. The washing is on.
We got 3 boiling hens the other day for $12. So Ive decided to try cooking one in the crockpot. Ive browned the poor old thing and put her in the crockpot. We decided that even if she is a little tougher the slow cooking should help, and if all else fails I love chicken sammies.

Finished the mitten I started on Friday night. And the front of my jacket yesterday. Its very economical on the wool that's for sure, think ive only used half a ball.

Happy birthday kiwimade - I make it a rule to not do housework on my birthday - ever (mind you I have lots of rules for not doing housework which I hate totally - as I said to a friend recently 'the trouble with housework is you do it one day and it needs doing again next year' -she just about choked on her coffee. Tongue was firmly in cheek though, I don't like it but I'm not quite that bad.

It's raining here, and the internet is still dropping out every few minutes, driving me bonkers. I don't know, but I suspect it's the modem. Might have to shout myself a better one but not just yet, have to save a few pennies.

Edited to add: I cooked a roast of beef on friday and it was so tough we couldn't eat it, but I minced some of the big piece which was left over and it was fine. I'm wondering if I can make rissoles for tonights tea with left over cooked minced beef. Any ideas? Mr K reckons as long as I cook the onion before adding it to the minced beef it should be okay as the meats already cooked, otherwise the onion would still be half raw when the rissoles were heated through. What do you think?

I've made rissoles out of tough meat kuaka and yep, cook the onions first so they are soft. Damed annoying isn't it, good money spent on a tough piece of meat. Not the way you want to enjoy your roast!

Making a smoked chicken pie (from scratch too!) for dinner as I suspect family will stay for dinner :). Have just made the stock out of the bones, fresh bay and thyme from the garden, a carrot, black pepper, coriander seeds and cumin seeds. Hope it tastes OK lol.

Will have some time for me shortly.

How do the rissoles stay together if its made out of cooked meat? I always cook my roast beef in the crockpot. Brown it first then put in with some beef stock. Or wine if you like it etc.
I doubt Ill be doing any housework tomorrow either lol... I don't have any plans at all. Don't even know what we will eat lol... Can see Im not enthused about this birthday lol... Hopefully next year will be different. A friend will come tomorrow tho, to bring my pressie. Cos MrP cant get into her house. She has stairs at the front and back.

I always put egg in the rissoles to make them stick together, so I'm hoping it will still work with the cooked beef. I'm thinking I should have done the beef in the crockpot. I bought two pieces, but the second one I sliced up to make "steaks", froze them and will casserole them.

Lovely day here now, just been for our walk, very warm out, am about to have a coffee out on the deck, then think about lunch. Might mow one of the lawns this afternoon. That "might" is underlined, as it's only a very slight "might" !!

I'm sure the ducks will be pleased about the weather, and they can fly high.

When I make rissoles with cold meat I put beaten egg in but also home-made breadcumbs or some mashed potato to help bind them together.

I've got a pork roast on in the crock-pot for tea--going to do some roast veges shortly--some greens--and Mr Binks would like poached eggs with it too--now I know that's not usual to have eggs with roast--but I'm looking after the neighbours chookies and they laid 4 eggs this morning--yummy fresh laid eggs--so eggs it is with the roast.
I'm just plodding getting the housework done--and knitting slippers for myself in between.

I always add grated raw carrot and onion along with breadcrumbs or porridge and eggs to minced raw meat if making patties, alos a bit of this and that , even grated Zuchini. :)

Just been sorting some winter clothes a realise that I have 4 neckwarmer/cowls and 4 long scarves and 5 woolie hats, and 3 pr of fingerle gloves. I shouldn't be cold eh. Just need to get into the sockmaking thing, my feet are cold even in summer and I wear bedsocks most of the year

My merino mix mittens. Ive made them narrower and they fit nicely. Lovely and warm.

Lol GMS I have a huge bag of scarves and matching hats, hangovers from when feather yarn hit the world lol.. I very seldom where them as I don't like things around my neck.
I prefer 3/4 sleeves too. But do get cold hands from the warfarin. hence I now have 3 pairs of mittens. I will possibly make one more pair to match my jacket, but Ill see.
I have a double wardrobe jam packed and then about 1/2 of a single loaded of clothes. I don't need to buy anything for a while..

I have about 4-5 pairs of socks, one is a knitted pair, one are bedsocks and I think theres a couple of white pair. Its VERY rare for me to wear them. Slippers and a blankie do me.. not keen on socks

Tummy is starting to rumble, A good sign, means I haven't been picking. I just got the old girl chook out of the crockpot and shes just about falling apart. Yummm far more flavour than the washed out things you get these days.

I wear socks all year round and 24 hours a day--I hate having bare feet--I knit my own slippers--have thinner ones for summer--now making myself some thick ones for the colder weather--I have just found a sock pattern using just 2 needles--I really don't like using circular needles--knitting some slippers for both sons as well--this knitting business is nearly a full time job--I don't know how I found the time to work full time--my days at home are just full of things to do.

Well the rissoles turned out okay but what a hassle to make! I diced the onion very fine knowing I had to cook it first, then without thinking biffed it into the cooked minced beef, so had to pick it all out again to cook it. What a flipping job. I used two eggs to bind it together and had intended to add a good splosh of sweet chilli sauce to add flavour and bind it, but they were in the frying pan when I realised I hadn't put it in. Decided to make a trifle in case the rissoles weren't much good so that at least we would have a pud. When I opened the can of fruit, the syrup oozed out all over the bench, so cleaned that mess up then when I tipped what I hadn't used into a basin I managed to slosh more all over the newly cleaned bench. Just as well I didn't do the lawns, might have had a disaster.

Son phoned this afternoon to wish me Happy Mothers Day and when I told him it was next weekend he said that's what he thought but his mate told him it was today.

Im the same Carole. Summer clothes all the time. But I do add slippers to my warfarin toes when they get too cold. Not for long tho. And Ill wear a merino thin jumper if Im going out. Usually just add a cardy of Im cold.

I have two friends who wrap up like its the antartic lol... My friend hates visiting in the winter cos she reckons our house is tooo cold.
I like my fresh air lol.

Oh Kuaka did they taste ok after all that trouble? Yumm trifle. I only have that at Christmas time.

Lol at your son,, you will get it wished twice this year. some sons wouldn't even think to ring.

Ive been gassing with a friend from Taranaki for nearly 2 hours so haven't done any knitting since tea time. Time to go and get those needles busy.

Rissoles were okay, a bit dry 'cos I cut all the fat off the meat.

Have hardly slept all night, so decided to get up and have a cup of tea, didn't seem much point staying in bed just tossing and turning, so I'm about to finish my zig-zag baby blanket. Pic later if I remember to take one before parceling it up and sending it on it's way.

Don't know what the weather is going to do today, might have some rain which will be a good excuse not to do the lawns.

Unhappy birthday for yesterday Kiwimade and today Popeyes - when I turned 50 quite a few years ago now I felt so "old" but it didn't last long and now feel just as young (except for a few extra twinges) every year.
Had a great day yesterday doing the track and tunnel - a 8km walk through the Manawatu gorge but along the rail line, it was so much fun.

Not much knitting lately so looking forward to a quieter afternoon so can get a bit caught up again.

Have a great day all and not get up to too much mischief! (But some is quite acceptable lol)

Kuaka not good being awake soo long.. The merino I just knitted was from Turkey. Amazing where it all comes from eh.

Ive had txts emails and a phone Call from Paeroa already this morning. So Ive only just finished eating my breakky lol.
Jarjar I do that look at peoples clothes and wonder where they get them, never wanted to take one of someones back lol

I notice clothes and hands but the funny thing is I don't notice colour. MrP will say Man he/she was black, and I seldom notice that. African black like I mean. but I very rarely even notice that.

Just had another call. lol I might not have oodles of friends but the few I have are all remembering. lol

My plan is to knit today and get takeaways for tea lol...
