No, that's wrong too. You are a rebel without a right answer

Or am I way off track here.

i know the stamps you mean but they don't have any surcharge on them for a charity.

So far we have Health and Red Cross but there are still 3 other organisations which have benefited from surcharges on New Zealand stamps. Who knows their stamps well enough to answer?

Quote kiwisteven

If you are looking for charities, this might not qualify but the 1990 Orchid miniature sheet was sold at a premium to raise funds for the 1990 stamp exhibition in Auckland.

Anzac (1936), NZ Philatelic Foundation (surcharges on M/S), Heart Foundation Cal (sold in post shops this year). How many cookies do I get?

If the various Philatelic organisations for which stamp expos & exhibitions were held are considered charities then the mini-sheets (eg 89 World Stamp Expo MS) might qualify

Ok - as a guess - the 1893 stamps with Adverts on the back - perhaps a sailing ship there ?

CORRECT! Well done. Award yourself a mellowpuff! Many people think that stamp has a ship at top because that was the year that frozen meat was first exported (by ship) from New Zealand but in reality it was to signify the empire links and also modern commerce.

NZ RSA (1936) CORRECT!
NZ PHILATELIC FOUNDATION 1990'S ONWARDS SHEETS. CORRECT!
The last one I had in mind was NZ 1990 (ie Zeapex'90) which had a surcharge on the Orchid sheet etc. This was/is a different organisation from the NZ Philatelic Foundation.
Do the Heart foundation stamps have a surcharge on the stamps themselves or the booklet itself? I don't have one nearby to check. Well done Don. Make sure David gives you an extra bikkie with your morning tea in the morning. You have earned it!

I considered this as it is clearly labeled Tuberculosis but I think you have to put it in with the rest of the health stamps as i think the funds all went to the health camps. it was all the same organisation.

nz post is 'worried' about reductions in mail volumes---your thoughts might help!!!!!!!!!

if they actively did something tangible to encourage use of stamps & something along the line of marketing 'sending cards', using gummed stamps & remember someones special day -- away from easy PO printed generic labels .. it mite help

perhaps they should look at their competition

get away from the monopoly SOE image that will be there until day 999999

market themselves properly

deliver a high quality service at a reasonable price & start taking responsibility when their system does not deliver rather than relying on small print disclaimers & 'we shall not reimburse' type clauses to try to avoid liability for their own stuff-ups ;-)

Any marketer with half a clue could tell them most of this ;-)

where have they been hiding while not seeking to better, & make more efficient & user friendly the business ? ;-)

it sounds like a 'bit of back to the basics' on how to run a postal business & keeping customers is just what the Doctor ordered.. ;-)

Now that review could cover a variety of things like - frequently ramping up sending costs & utterly confusing customers in the process through to thoroughly persisting them off enuff to make some look at the competition .. how to downsize the number of deliveries so sight of a postie becomes something headed towards blue moon territory .. how to buy untold new sorting machines, then turn around as soon as they thort everyone had forgotten & ramping up costs again .. how to sell adhesive stamps that dont stick or wont come off easily once used through the system ;-)

If Post are having so many problems keeping their lot on target then I have to admire the Company that operates their delivery guys on scooters who probably pass more mailboxes than they put stuff in but still make a go of it .. most would wonder how the h3ll NZ Post have managed to not make things work when they've thrown all manner of obstacles in the way of these smaller outfits and yet the independents still do a very very good job .. ;-)

Wonder if an atomic bomb dropped on the HQ Boardroom would wake things up to see reality ? ;-)

Operating the empire like a Postal Service and a Banking Service rather than the typical SOE Empire complete with the expected vast clusters of inherited Bums on seats (some in varying stages of morphing from politics towards retirement or pre-retirement) mite also do wonders, some mite think .. ;-)

Did start my own thread but nobody came to help except for gandalff4 who suggested I post in Stamp Club thread so here I am and would like to know if someone could give me advice on which would be the best stamps to buy from the new Hobbit range that is being released soon. I have a mishmash of the LOTR stamps but have noticed that FDC always seem to be a good buy considering I always go for the stamps themselves. Am I collecting wrong here? I am sure someone out there could steer me in the right direction. TIA

Hobbit issues look like being similar in demand to the Lord of the rings issues. If this is the case then FDC's may again outstrip the mint prices. Of those the sheetlet FDC's were the best. Look out for any special postmarks from Wellington for the opener and of course if you can get any of the covers signed by a Hobbit star then you really have something special. Generally FDC's of the philatelic bureau variety are not as good as Mint stamps but something like the Hobbit will be different.

The stamp is not rare, assuming you mean the 1962 Project Mercury stamp issued for the flight of John Glenn. Here is a catalogue value:
http://www.allworldstamps.com/results.asp?cid=241&sid=21
3&range=N&pg=131

You may have heard that there was no publicity of the issue beforehand in case the flight failed. Information about the stamp is on this page:

has anybody solved how to get the gum off the aussie international post stamps??

Get a large pot of water with a pinch of sea salt ,the stamp and a small pebble.Bring the water to the boil and drop the pebble and the stamp into the water, boil for 1 minute exactly .Then drain the water ,throw away the stamp, dry the pebble thoroughly ,save for the next stamp to ruin.

I presume Aust Post have adopted the same ruinous regime as the Pommie Post bods with rendering newer international stamps into the large casualty list for trying to collect thse specimens - would have thort the normal 60c domestic values mite be seeing more recycling for the unfranked jobs ? ;-)

Can someone tell me where I can get a collection valued? My father died a long time ago; he collected Greek stamps for some reason and had a pretty extensive collection all beautifully arrayed and carefully labelled. It's been sitting in the linen cupboard for about 40 years now ...

it surprises me really that they would go this way .. most issues have of recent become more easily soakable -- the only exception being the very early peel + sticks and odd one or two that were issued with gold printing as a variation of the normal standard issue -- 3 or 4 of these that I'm aware of ..

I wonder if perhaps they mite be reused ones with some sort of reuser applied glue used on second trip through, or the gum hasn't matured -- with some issues a few years ago 12+ months after issue date & soakability became easier as the gum aged .. attempting to soak some earlier meant high casualty rates, thinning, damage & at worst they disintegrated if the process left them 'swimming' too long

Okay here are some new stamp quizz questions that should tax your memories of knowledge.
1, When and where was the first pictorial postmark issued in New Zealand?

2.What town/city in New Zealand was the first to celebrate its centennial with a special postmark?

3.what is the lowest value postage stamp currently valid for postage in New Zealand?

4.When did Captain cook first appear on a New Zealand postage stamp?

5.When did a Duchess first appear on a New Zealand postage stamp?

6. when were the first NZ stamps issued celebrating Edmund Hillary's achievements?

Now here are some queries that I'm not sure of the answers to.

7. What NZ city is least featured on NZ stamps? Is it Hastings, Whangarei or another city?

8. and lastly what is the largest NZ town never to have appeared on a postage stamp. Could it be Greymouth, Blenheim, Wainuiomata, Levin, Wairoa, Otorohonga, Dargaville or have these appeared on a stamp and there is another larger town (not suburb of a city) that hasn't appeared on a NZ Post stamp?
